Community staff nurse - health visiting

Glastonbury
Somerset County Council
Community staff nurse
Posted: 7 November
Offer description

Overview

We are looking for a qualified nurse or midwife to specialise or further their career through our dedicated development programme. Beginning in early 2026, the training will provide in‑depth experience in a Public Health Nursing team and support you to interview for and undertake the Specialist Public Health Community Nurse (SCPHN) qualification. You will also gain a full understanding of the role before joining the academic course.

Post‑Training Support

You will be fully supported in post with a comprehensive induction programme, additional training, a buddy system and guidance from practice educators and health visitors. You will not be doing this alone; you will be part of a cohort of nurses and midwives undertaking the same training and qualification. Many of our health visitors have completed the course themselves and built lasting friendships within the team.

Qualification Path

Subject to a satisfactory interview with the University of the West of England in September, you will then start your 12‑month postgraduate qualification (Level 7) in September 2026 or September 2027. The course will be delivered through a mix of university‑based attendance, remote learning and practice, with 2 days protected study time and three days on the job gaining real‑world experience. Upon qualification you will be well placed to apply for a permanent Health Visitor role in Somerset.

Responsibilities

* Deliver the Healthy Child Programme for children aged 0–5 years and their families, providing evidence‑based interventions and motivational interviewing.
* Assess child development and undertake holistic assessments.
* Provide advice and promote health and wellbeing to children and families.
* Promote health protection and keep children safe.
* Work closely with other local services, including Social Care, the voluntary sector, GPs, education and pre‑schools.
* Manage your own workload and get to know the families you support.
* Play a part in reducing health inequalities across Somerset, influencing positive outcomes for all children in our community.

Benefits

We offer a supportive and rewarding environment, fantastic employee benefits and great training and development opportunities.

* Flexible, family‑friendly working patterns (9:00–5:00 Monday to Friday)
* Prioritised superb safeguarding, clinical and restorative supervision
* The opportunity to fulfil your leadership role within the team
* Continuing professional development opportunities
* 30 days annual leave allowance (plus bank holidays), with the opportunity to purchase up to 2 weeks additional leave
* Staff discounts in gyms
* Employee assistance and wellbeing services
* Auto‑enrolment onto a generous pension scheme and optional pension enhancement through an additional voluntary contribution scheme
* A flexible benefits scheme via salary sacrifice to obtain a cycle for work and health screenings
* My Staff Shop offering discounts in shops, online shopping, restaurants, cinema tickets, insurance benefits and more
