About the role
As a School Medical Officer you will hold a recognised First Aid qualification and your main responsibility is to provide first aid support to students and staff in case of injury or illness on school premises, assessing the situation, administering appropriate first aid treatment, and coordinating further medical care when necessary, while adhering to all relevant health and safety guidelines and maintaining accurate records of incidents. You will be giving immediate help to casualties with common injuries or illnesses, provide administration and monitoring of medical support plans and ensure medical plans for students are in place and shared with staff. You will also act as the school's designated allergy lead, working to ensure that the school meets and exceeds the best practice guidelines laid out in the Schools Allergy Code from The Allergy Team.
The role is demanding and you will be expected to lead on student medical needs in addition to supporting the Student Services team with reception and administrative tasks, where appropriate. The ability to work professionally under pressure, to meet deadlines and operate flexibly within the changing needs of the school is essential. Knowledge of the school environment is desirable but not essential as training can be provided; however the new post-holder. Excellent communication skills are essential as is enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to play an active role in the life of the school. You will work alongside our Student Services team and the mental health first aiders to provide a holistic, supportive environment.
Requirements for the role:
13. 3-day First Aid Qualification or willingness to take the 3-day qualification course
14. Medical knowledge: Basic understanding of common childhood illnesses and injuries
15. Strong communication skills - the ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, and families in emergency situations
16. Decision-Making Skills: Ability to quickly assess situations and make appropriate first aid decisions
17. Professionalism: Maintain a calm and composed demeanor during emergencies
About you
Key responsibilities of the School Medical Officer role are to:
18. assess First Aid problems presented by students and staff, taking appropriate action in the event of an emergency and communicating with staff and families as necessary and recording information on Class Charts
19. be responsible for administering prescribed drugs which are necessary to be taken by students during the school day, ensuring that parental consent is obtained and recorded
20. be responsible for the safe-keeping of prescribed drugs in a locked cupboard
attend to minor medical needs of students, such as administering plasters, ice packs etc as required, and look after students who feel ill. To inform the Head Teacher in the event of more serious medical concerns and make the necessary arrangements for families to be contacted
21. advise on general health matters as presented by the staff and students, and communicate with families as appropriate
co-ordinate, administer and maintain Individual Health Care Plans for students with specific medical needs in conjunction with families and any other relevant health care professionals
22. meet with students returning to school after an injury which impacts mobility, hearing or sight and agree a personal emergency evacuation plan (PEEP), liaising with the Assistant Headteacher
23. make arrangements for vaccination sessions, hearing tests, eye sight tests held by the Local Authority for the relevant age groups of students, undertaking the necessary communications and ensuring appropriate records are completed and retained
24. enter all student medical information into SIMS, maintain accurate records in accordance with new and changing medical needs, and inform staff of relevant information, including for all school trips
25. liaise with class teachers regarding confidential medical matters
26. complete an online accident record of all incidents and accidents, including details of injuries,
27. carry out monthly stock audits of all First Aid boxes and First Aid kits throughout the school (including those used for trips) and ensure they are replenished.
28. Ensure all emergency First Aid medical equipment is in good working order
29. be responsible for maintaining stocks and ordering medical supplies and equipment in order to ensure adequate emergency medical resources exist within the school
30. keep an accurate list of all staff accredited with First Aid at Work, together with dates of expiry, and arrange training to ensure that an appropriate number of staff for all areas of school are trained in these skills
31. take responsibility for the medical room and ensure it is kept clean and tidy
32. maintain confidentiality of information acquired while undertaking duties for the School
33. carry out risk assessments for students returning to school after a period of absence, e.g. broken limbs, operations.
