Job summary
This is a replacement post due to retirement within the Clinical Microbiology team.
We are a group of 13 consultants working across the fantastic city of Liverpool who deliver the clinical microbiology service to over 2000 inpatients, and the surrounding community services. There are many tertiary specialist units who require our expertise, including maxillofacial, bone marrow transplant, cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery.
We work closely with our Infectious Diseases colleagues and the Tropical School of Medicine is located by the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
The laboratory is housed in a new, state of the art building on site at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. Working alongside the laboratory is an integral part of this role
We want to work with dynamic, forward-thinking individuals who can deliver a clinically facing microbiology role. They will need to be able to work and engage with the laboratory and clinical team within the department and across the Trusts that we cover.
Main duties of the job
The following is a summary of the requirements of the job
1. They will be expected to give clinical advice to staff across the Liverpool health economy face to face and via the telephone.
2. Lead the clinical consults service including ITU ward rounds
3. Engage in ward rounds and specialty MDTs
4. Work with the OPAT team at Aintree hospital
5. Assist in the delivery the AMS strategy for the Trusts
6. Engagement and liaison with the microbiology laboratory to ensure high quality work is being carried out and is compliant with UKAS accreditations
7. Support the IPC teams, with an option to be the IPC Doctor
8. Supervision and education for medical trainees and STPs
9. Take part in the on call service, which currently stands at 1:10
10. There are opportunities to deliver on site clinical microbiology to other Trusts in the city
11. Work with the Infectious Diseases team based at the Royal Liverpool Hospital
12. Work with the operational team to drive service and quality improvement projects

Qualifications
Essential
24. Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
25. Commensurate qualifications and experience or Consultant Clinical Scientist of equivalent standing
26. Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
27. Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent.

28. Five years' supervised training in an appropriate specialist or equivalent training programme.
29. Further qualification such as Postgraduate thesis (MD, PhD or equivalent), MSc, DipHIC etc.
30. Experience in tropical medicine or DTM and H.

31. Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CST in Microbiology, or jointly in Microbiology/Infectious Disease.
32. Ability to offer an expert clinical and laboratory opinion on a range of problems relating to Microbiology in primary care, inpatient and tertiary referral settings including infection control.
33. Experience and expertise in managing critically ill patients within a medical ICU/HDU environment Evidence of continuing medical education (existing consultants must be able to demonstrate active participation in a recognised CPD scheme).
