Based at our state-of-the-art Research and Development Centre in Northamptonshire, we are responsible for the design, manufacture, testing and racing of the 8-time World-Championship winning Formula 1 hybrid Power Units used by the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team. We are also proud to supply Power Units to McLaren, Williams, and Alpine Formula 1 Teams. As a Materials Technician Apprentice you will learn to carry out both routine and one-off laboratory testing (and manufacturing where relevant) and perform a variety of technical support functions across the organisation, ensuring we are in the best possible position to continue winning F1 World Championships. You will be supported to achieve a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Qualification throughout the duration of this programme. What can we offer you? By the end of your apprenticeship, you will have developed the knowledge and skills to be responsible for: The in-house testing facilities covering mechanical testing (tensile, fatigue, visco-elastic, hardness, wear), thermal analysis, heat treatment, XRF and rheological properties. Ensuring that all laboratory equipment is maintained, serviced and calibrated. Ensuring rapid resolution of faults and breakdowns of equipment to ensure continued operation of the materials facilities. Performing daily, weekly and monthly checks Supporting the materials engineers with cutting/sectioning, mounting and polishing of materials for analysis. Ensuring that all operations are covered by relevant operating procedures and H&S compliance. Providing continuous improvement within the laboratory’s Optical and electron microscopy Processing and analysis of materials test data. Design of materials test fixtures and samples. Essential For you to have achieved at least 5 x GCSE’s, including Maths and English Language, at grades equivalent to a C or above (4 - 9) And to be able to demonstrate a good understanding of engineering sciences (Maths, Physics, Chemistry) To be tenacious, curious and self-motivated To be methodical and rigorous with outstanding attention to detail.
