Join us at University Hospitals Of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust Endoscopy Department for an exciting opportunity as a Senior Clinical Endoscopist to join our team.
This role requires a skilled, experienced endoscopist proficient in both upper and lower GI endoscopic procedures and an independent prescriber who is committed to improving patient outcomes. We support ongoing development with mentorship from Senior Clinical Endoscopists and clinical specialists.
You will work across our busy endoscopy units within the Trust Hospitals and the UHL in the Community Hospitals and will be expected to work a flexible shift pattern to cover weekdays, some weekends and evening lists. There is opportunity to learn new skills and contribute to service development while making a meaningful impact in patient care.
This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the rapid development of endoscopy services across Leicester and Leicestershire.
Main duties
* Undertake and develop the role of Clinical Endoscopist performing diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI procedures within agreed protocols, including the administration of intravenous sedation or Entonox.
* Assist in the Clinical Endoscopist-led telephone triage service as part of the wider transformation project for the 2WW lower gastrointestinal pathway.
* Ensure patients are suitable for clinical endoscopy; discuss and inform the patient of indications for investigation and obtain informed consent in line with UHL guidelines. Ensure risks and benefits are understood and discuss sedation/Entonox options.
* Prescribe and administer IV sedation in line with local and national policy, maintaining safe, independent practice.
Clinically supervise junior Clinical Endoscopists, other registrants, support workers and junior doctors in delivering care to gastroenterology and endoscopy patients.
Maintain accurate and legible medical and nursing records and ensure updates to the endoscopy reporting system.
* Work with the Service Manager, Clinicians, Matron, Lead Nurse Endoscopist and other Clinical Endoscopists on service strategy and development.
* Exercise professional accountability for managing a caseload of patients within the specialty, delivering individualised care. Establish and run Clinical Endoscopist-led outpatient clinics alongside clinicians.
* Develop, implement and regularly review treatment plans for all patients accessing the clinical service. Build a supportive relationship with patients and their families.
* Improve patient access to the service by providing prompt assessment, support, advice and appropriate treatments.
* Develop specialist clinical knowledge, skills and innovative practice; act as a referral source within the MDT and beyond.
* Promote high-quality clinical care using evidence-based practice and disseminate guidelines. Contribute to audit and development of Endoscopy Units including JAG and GRS requirements.
* Develop, review and update protocols for the Clinical Endoscopist-led service; influence policy-making and clinical guidelines internally and externally.
* Participate in audit and research to ensure safe, evidence-based practice; promote the specialty through publishing and presenting innovations and research findings locally and nationally.
Further duties align with service development and governance in endoscopy.
Training and qualifications
* Registered healthcare professional
* Master's (Level 7) or equivalent specialist experience
* JAG accreditation in FS/Colonoscopy and OGD
* Independent Prescribing Certificate
* JAG Polypectomy Course
* JAG accredited trainer (TCT or TGT)
* IRMER qualified
* Portfolio of certified/accredited professional development
* Trained in Advanced Communication skills
Desirable
* Clinical Leadership Programme
* Independent at trans nasal endoscopy (TNE)
* BCSP accredited colonoscopist (or working towards)
* Small bowel/colon capsule reading
* Research qualification
Experience
* In-depth knowledge of issues and developments within Endoscopy service
* Evidence of innovation and achievements in clinical practice
Skills
* Meets JAG KPIs for colonoscopy and OGD; high level of clinical expertise
* Excellent understanding of clinical governance; knowledge of current national developments in endoscopy
* Proven IT skills including NHS systems; participates in teaching
* Recognises own limitations; venepuncture and cannulation skills; audit/research skills
