Overview

We are currently recruiting for a Healthcare Assistant to join our multi-disciplinary team at St Julia's Hospice in Hayle. The post holder will be involved in the daily activities of patient care and assist in providing a high standard of specialist palliative care to patients and their families. The post holder will ideally possess a minimum qualification of NVQ Level 3 in Healthcare, or equivalent. You will be required to work on internal rotation, which will include; nights, days, early's and lates. Palliative care experience would be an advantage.


Main duties of the job

1. To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team in providing a high standard of specialist palliative care to patients and their families.
2. Under the supervision of the Ward Sister/nurse in charge on the shift, the post holder is involved with the daily activities of patient care.
3. To maintain agreed standards of care and to take an active part in clinical audits in order to improve nursing practice.
4. To work primarily within the in-patient unit.
5. To contribute to the team in delivering physical, emotional, social and spiritual support to patients and carers.
6. To ensure care is delivered in a style appropriate to the patient’s individual needs.
7. To report the condition of patients to the registered nurse, and report any accidents or incidents on the unit.
8. To understand the importance of confidentiality and when to disclose information.
9. Understands the principles underpinning the risk assessment process and contributes to maintaining health and safety requirements of the unit, including understanding the patient call system and statutory training requirements.
10. To maintain accurate record keeping and understand how to access journal and library resources to provide information to patients, carers and other professionals.
11. To know when to refer to another member of the team and how to handle telephone communications and messages as required.
12. To support volunteers working within the Hospice and participate in further training to maintain professional development.
13. To participate in ward meetings and ensure accurate information is fed back to the multi-disciplinary team.
14. To participate in annual staff appraisals or as appropriate and recognise areas for personal development.
15. To be aware of Fire Regulations, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and any subsequent relevant legislation.

Job responsibilities

JOB DESCRIPTION: Health Care Assistant (NVQ level 3 or equivalent)

REPORTS TO: Ward Sister/Manager

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Clinical Services

JOB PURPOSE: To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team in providing a high standard of specialist palliative care to patients and their families.

DIMENSIONS: To work primarily within the in-patient unit.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL: Must have appropriate NVQ qualifications

* Previous care work experience
* Good team working skills
* Ability to prioritise workload
* Ability to work flexibly
* Calm under pressure
* Some recent care work experience
* End of life care experience
