Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly and well-established team of Airway specialists at Luton and Dunstable Hospital, a large district general hospital with a tertiary head and neck centre.
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Consultant to join our busy, friendly, and expanding department. In 2025, a new acute service block will open, featuring eight new operating theatres, a 22-bed critical care unit, a tertiary level NICU, and a large maternity department. The department currently includes over 45 Consultants, 11 Specialty Doctors, and many doctors in training. The appointee will primarily anaesthetise for specialist airway lists and various elective surgical specialties. The non-resident on-call duties cover emergency surgery and obstetrics.

Luton and Dunstable Hospital is conveniently located within easy access to central London and the Midlands. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes' drive. Nearby attractive villages and towns include St Albans and Harpenden, known for excellent schools.

Main duties of the job
You will join a supportive, dynamic team of Airway Anaesthetists and collaborate with Head and Neck surgeons to provide multidisciplinary care.
You will be involved in preoperative assessment, perioperative management, and enhanced recovery protocols for complex airway patients, treating benign and malignant conditions.
Currently, there are approximately 3 head & neck cancer lists weekly and about 40 free flap cases annually. Procedures include neck dissections, laser surgeries, and laryngectomies. New airway techniques such as Robotics and High-frequency jet ventilation are also performed. You will participate in airway MDT meetings and contribute valuable input.
An essential part of the role involves delivering airway training through workshops, courses, and study days for anaesthetists and assistants. Regular workshops include airway simulation, fibreoptic courses, and advanced airway workshops.
Our department encourages quality improvement projects, with current presentations of 2-3 posters annually at national and international meetings. You will also support guideline development, equipment procurement, and may take on the airway lead role in the future.
