Job Description

We are looking to recruit an Interaction Designer who can work effectively in multidisciplinary agile teams to deliver excellent results for Version 1’s customers in the public and private sector. The successful candidate will design accessible, usable and inclusive services using tools such as Figma and the GOV.UK prototype kit, working with users and stakeholders to determine the best way to design services that meet user needs and business objectives. Your portfolio should demonstrate your ability to understand users and design to meet their needs, adhere to relevant design standards, and communicate your design decisions effectively.


Key Responsibilities

* Collaborate with multidisciplinary agile teams to deliver user‑centred design solutions.
* Conduct user research activities or collaborate with researchers to understand user needs.
* Create and iterate prototypes of varying fidelity using appropriate tools.
* Evaluate concepts and prototypes, explaining them to stakeholders and team members.
* Apply design thinking and evidence‑based design frameworks to produce simple, feasible solutions.
* Ensure designs are inclusive and meet accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2, UK public sector guidelines).
* Communicate design process and decisions effectively to gain confidence of internal colleagues and customers.
* Manage stakeholder relationships, escalating issues when necessary to unblock design work.


Qualifications

* Strong understanding of design thinking and ability to apply frameworks appropriately.
* Evidence‑based design approach, testing assumptions to find simplest solutions.
* Experience with basic user research and usability testing.
* Ability to design for a wide range of user needs, explaining design decisions and constraints.
* Experience creating and iterating prototypes with appropriate fidelity.
* Knowledge of design patterns, design systems (GOV.UK, GDS) and participation in wider design community.
* Understanding of accessible/inclusive design principles and ability to evaluate designs against accessibility standards.
* Deep knowledge of inclusive design and WCAG 2.2, UK public sector service design, GDS standards, GOV.UK design system patterns.
* Consultancy skills: clear communication of design process, stakeholder management, escalation when required.
* Agile working experience in multidisciplinary teams, aligning work to agile workflows across all stages of the development lifecycle.
