National Energy System Operator (NESO) is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join the Data Science team within the Gas and Whole Energy Network Development group. The successful candidate will be based in Wokingham, Warwick or Glasgow, with hybrid working arrangements available.
Overview
As the UK’s energy system transforms, NESO is creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for Great Britain. The Senior Data Scientist will develop, maintain and run probabilistic forecasting models and lead the automation of data science pipelines that support gas network planning, hydrogen network planning, decarbonisation and whole energy interactions.
Key Accountabilities
* Collect, collate and cleanse raw data, converting it into usable formats while documenting data provenance and ensuring decision‑support quality for NESO leadership.
* Develop probabilistic forecasts of GB gas demand and supply at regional level using Monte‑Carlo sampling and other statistical techniques.
* Support projects across GWEND, including hydrogen network planning, decarbonisation of industrial clusters and whole energy interactions, involving geospatial data analysis.
* Design, develop and maintain data pipelines and automate existing processes within GWEND.
* Communicate technical findings to senior management, Ofgem, DESNZ and National Gas.
* Pursue continuous improvement of data science, machine learning and automation practices and monitor industry trends.
* Lead data quality and data management processes, ensuring robust data governance.
* Mentor and support colleagues within NESO’s data science community, demonstrating best practice.
* Undertake ad‑hoc projects related to data management, cleansing, high‑volume analytics and insight generation as requested by NESO management.
Qualifications
* Proficient in writing clear, well‑documented productionised code in R, Python or another high‑level language.
* Experience developing statistical and machine‑learning forecasting models from first principles; knowledge of Monte‑Carlo methods, regression analysis and clustering.
* Skilled with version control, cloud computing environments and end‑to‑end data pipelines.
* Ability to discuss modelling assumptions with stakeholders and translate technical findings into actionable business insights.
* Logical, creative problem‑solving skills and collaboration across multiple teams.
* Experience in the energy industry, particularly gas or hydrogen, is beneficial.
Benefits
A competitive salary of £58,000–£72,000 per annum (dependent on experience) plus a performance bonus. Additional benefits include 26 days annual leave, a contributory pension scheme with double match up to 12% of your contribution, and full support for professional development.
