The Role

We’re seeking a Controls & Instrument Engineer to join our Buzzard Operations & Maintenance team in Aberdeen.

CNOOC International is one of the most reputable oil producers in the UK North Sea, operating the Buzzard, Golden Eagle and Scott platforms. Our business strategy is to maximize the value of our existing North Sea portfolio while creating new opportunities for global growth.

Reporting to the Buzzard Operations & Maintenance Delivery Manager, the Controls & Instrument Engineer provides technical support for CNOOC International’s Buzzard Asset and is responsible for technical integrity across a wide range of Engineering activities. The role is responsible for delivering high quality technical support across a wide range of Control & Instrument Engineering issues.

As Controls & Instrument Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering best‑in‑class results for UK Production Operations by:

* Ensuring all activities are planned and conducted in compliance with HSE policy & CNOOC’s Life Saving Rules.
* Actively supporting CNOOC’s commitment to safety and environmental protection. Take a proactive role in identifying safety and environmental improvements.
* Ensuring positive HSE performance by personnel, contractors and others working under your direction.
* Having a good understanding of Major Accident Hazards and participating in the resolution of any deviations against the MAH score.
* Ensuring a good understanding and compliance with our four principals in the Process Safety Management Framework.
* Ensuring effective cost management for areas of responsibility and execute tasks in a way which maximises value and minimises waste and risk.
* Providing cost forecasting for delegated OPEX cost centres and identifying cost‑saving opportunities and seeing them through to completion.


Technical Accountabilities

* Responsible for ensuring delivery of technically correct and timely solutions to all issues relating to Control & Instrument systems / equipment.
* Providing onshore discipline support to Maintenance Planning in accordance with the Daily Scheduling Process and the Integrated Activity Planning process.
* Attend and contribute to IAP meetings as discipline representative and provide timely and constructive feedback to enable the planning process to delivery on Asset KPIs.
* Responsible for ensuring that all Control & Instrument (OPEX) activities within the IAP are correctly resourced and achievable within the time period.
* Proactive management of all safety and business critical maintenance backlog / forelog.
* Regularly review performance of Control & Instrument systems and responsible for execution of remedial activities arising from reviews.
* Provide discipline support to the review and amendment of Planned Maintenance Routines and Strategies within SAP where required and provide recommendations for critical spares to optimise asset inventory.
* Ensure work procedures are technically sound and carried out in accordance with CNOOC management systems and procedures.
* Assist with the resolution of operational problems, including participation in and close‑out of investigations and root cause analysis.
* Raise engineering changes and liaise as required with the Engineering function to ensure work is properly prioritised.
* Provide input as required to the Asset Strategy by identifying future opportunities to minimise OPEX spend (mothballing, etc.).
* Provide support to the TAR team for screening TAR work and ensuring readiness.
* Ensure timely closeout of assigned Enablon (HSE) related actions.
* Provide Control & Instrument support to progress the asset towards Net Zero targets including the delivery of ERAP scopes.
* Facilitate control room alarm reviews with the CROs and ensure actions are in place to improve performance.
* Identify instrument and control risks and define mitigating controls / activities to resolve.
* Ensure strong collaboration among the onshore Buzzard Collaboration Room team and the offshore teams.
* Identify and communicate requirements for when support is required from outside the combined asset team.
* Undertake offshore visits to ensure the delivery of key scopes and provide support to the assets.
* Responsible for ensuring the scopes in the IAP are compliant with gate criteria, and are ready for execution as per the plan and are within budget.
* Participate in the annual OPEX budget process and ensure any scopes which pose a risk to the operational efficiency of the asset are captured in the budget.
* Overall, fostering a collaborative culture across a diverse group of people to achieve key results.


Who are we looking for?

Successful candidates will have a thorough understanding of all Controls & Instrumentation Operations & Maintenance matters to allow them to act as subject matter expert for the Buzzard Asset team. Beyond that, we are interested in hearing from candidates with:

* Bachelor’s or master’s Degree in a Control & Instrument Engineering (or equivalent experience).
* Ideally, some hands‑on operations field environment experience.
* Knowledgeable on Performance Standards.
* Strong initiative and orientation towards continuous improvement.
* An ability to balance innovation and risk in addressing operational challenges.
* Strong communication, interpersonal skills and organisational skills with the ability to work in a flexible team environment.
* Ability to work independently and in a team.
* Preferably achieved or be in the final stages of achieving Chartered Professional (CEng) status with a recognised body (such as the IEEE).
* A strong influencing ability and a high degree of flexibility in your working style to adapt to changing operational and business environments and priorities.
* A role model mindset for HSSE&A, working within HSE requirements and ensuring that related activities are planned and conducted in compliance with current policies and practices.
* Strong project development and execution skills and an ability to balance innovation and risk in addressing operational challenges.
* An ability to readily accept accountability and insist on it from others.
* Strong initiative and orientation towards Continuous Improvement to take every opportunity to consider alternative solutions in light of lessons learned.
