Specialist in Special Care Dentistry - Band C

The Community Dental Service provides dental treatment for those patients who have difficulty in obtaining treatment from other services. It provides a dental public health and treatment service acting in a complimentary way to the hospital and general practitioner services. The provision of comprehensive oral health care for client groups in line with the Service's contractual requirements. To provide specialist care and advice to those groups we are commissioned to see following integrated care pathways and support colleagues to do likewise. Support the Clinical Lead, Service Manager and Dental Team, in service development for all areas of SCD or Paediatric Dentistry.
Main duties of the job
Undertake thorough examination and assessment of patients and use the most appropriate restorative, periodontal and surgical treatments. Plan and manage care for a range of patients including those where there are complex medical comorbidities or patients require involvement with other professionals/carers to resolve complex patient management issues.

Job responsibilities
Working as part of a wider management team:
* a) Liaise with and develop multidisciplinary working as appropriate (e.g. hospital staff and consultants, general dental practitioner, carers and learning disabilities staff)
* b) Advise the Clinical Lead on the development of the specialist adult special care dental service or paediatric service.
* c) Support the development and monitoring of integrated care pathways and treatment policies for a wide range of patient groups, which may include involvement in the Managed Clinical Network in SCD/Paediatric Dentistry as appropriate.
* d) Take responsibility for the running of the immediate clinical environment and the immediate dental team.
* e) Responsibility for providing accurate information in relation to activities undertaken.
* f) Understand and advise other team members on health and safety issues.
* g) Manage clinical performance including quality of care for adult special needs services or paediatric services.
* h) Contribute to aspects of the governance systems.
Person Specification
Education
* Full registration with the GDC.
* On the GDC Specialist Register in SCD or Paediatrics or will have a CCST within twelve months of interview.
* Must be on a PCT Performer list.
* Full UK driving license.
* Experience within Community Dental setting.
Training
* Evidence of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate dentists.
* Further qualification or training in education or supervision.
* Sedation and ideally advanced techniques.
Special Knowledge
* Competence in sedation, general anaesthesia and management of individuals and groups of vulnerable people requiring SCD or L3 paediatric patients.
* Varied clinical experience in primary and secondary dental care.
Other
* Ability to travel extensively across the district including the transportation of equipment as and when required to meet the needs and demands of the service with own vehicle.
