Senior Backend Engineer Remote across UK & Europe
Tech: Kotlin, React, Postgres and AWS
Theyve built something that makes accountants say, I didnt think this was even possible.
And theyre just getting started.
This isnt maintenance work or fixing spaghetti left by the last engineer. Its new product build.
Youll be delivering features, reducing tech debt, and shaping the backend foundations for a platform taking on the likes of Oracle, NetSuite and Xero.
They already have the design and frontend nailed. What they need now are backend engineers who can bring structure, high standards, and a bit of backbone. People wholl push back when something doesnt make sense.
The stack is Kotlin on AWS, but if youve used any OO language (Java, Python, Ruby, C#, PHP) and are open to learning, thats fine. Theres a monolith (by design), organised into modules.
Theyre not obsessed with microservices for the sake of it.
Youll join a 20-person engineering team thats currently levelling up its structure, introducing proper processes, and looking to hire another three backend devs this year. Its remote first, with 90% of the team across Europe, and youll actually have autonomy to get work done.
No legacy code. No over engineering. No ivory tower architects.
Youll:
* Build and optimise backend services and APIs for high-performing applications
* Own your work from design through to deployment
* Keep code readable, maintainable and tested (they dont worship TDD, just logic and clarity)
* Work closely with senior engineers who give good, honest PR feedback
* Use AI in your workflow as much as you want, they actively encourage it
You should apply if you:
* Have strong experience building highly scalable backend systems with OOP languages
* Have experience with Kotlin or want to learn it.
* Write sensible code and tests without disappearing into theory
* Can communicate clearly in a remote setup
* Want to be part of something early but well-funded
* Ideally experience in fintech, payments, or accounting
Theres funding, traction, and big ambitions, but the best bit is that youll be joining when things are still being built, not just maintained.
Interview process:
* Intro call
* Take-home assessment this will take no longer than 2 hours
* Technical interview with 2 engineers discussing take home challenge and then technical questions
* Meet the CTO
If that sounds like your kind of challenge, apply or DM for more information
