Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for an individual with strong leadership skills to join our dynamic pharmacy team in supporting the delivery of a safe and effective vaccination service, in particular COVID-19 and Influenza. They will be responsible for pharmaceutical, clinical and governance aspects including the safe handling of vaccinations across all services. They will work closely with the nursing, medical and operational managers within NELFT.
The post holder will work with the NELFT infection prevention and control team, integrated care boards and local consultant microbiologists to develop, implement and monitor the antimicrobial stewardship programme across the Trust.
The post holder will also be involved in the delivery of a clinical pharmacy service to inpatient rehabilitation wards across the Trust and contribute to the development of junior and trainee staff.
Due to the wide geographical spread of our services the post holder is expected to travel and work across the Trust and participate in on-call and weekend working duties.
This is a fixed term post for 12 months
Main duties of the job
To lead the antimicrobial stewardship agenda in the delivery of antibiotic stewardship strategies to optimise antibiotic use and minimise development of resistance.
To lead all on aspects of pharmaceutical safety and handling of vaccinations during campaigns and delivery of programmes
To participate in the provision of a clinical pharmacy service to inpatient rehabilitation wards and medicines advice to community-based services across the Trust.
To undertake line management duties and clinical supervision of junior and trainee staff within the team.
To oversee the undertaking of local audits and to share findings at respective governance and operational meetings.
To play an active role in the Trust’s quality improvement agenda, with a specific focus on medicines safety.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Responsibilities will include:
Ensuring successful delivery of a COVID-19 and Influenza vaccination campaign in liaison with the Trust infection prevention and control team including all aspects of vaccine procurement, storage, delivery, safe administration and writing of clinical protocols and guidelines.
To support the training and education of staff working and handling vaccinations across services .
Working with local integrated care boards in the development of an antimicrobial strategy, implementation of best practices and monitoring of compliance and adherence to formularies.
To support the infection prevention and control teams in the delivery of national infection control objectives by providing specialist advise on antimicrobial prescribing and consumption and supporting the wider infection prevention and control agenda.
Integral to this is promoting the responsible, safe, and cost-effective prescribing of antimicrobials, optimising clinical outcomes and minimising adverse events.
Participation in the inpatient ward clinical rota and delivery of a safe and effective clinical service including involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings, development of own prescribing practice and provision of clinical supervision to junior and trainee staff.
To demonstrate strong communication skills, act as a mentor and coach to students, junior and senior staff, facilitating their development and confidence in the delivery of high standards of clinical care.
To investigate medicines related incidents and contribute to shared learning and improvements to processes, ensuring appropriate escalation of risks where deemed appropriate.
Leading on quality improvement projects to change processes and clinical pathways towards better outcomes for patients and enhanced patient safety.
To act as a clinical role model, demonstrate innovation and extend the boundaries of the profession.
