Overview

Lead Pharmacist - Surgery 8b (Attracts 5,000 RRP)

Job Summary: An enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Clinical Pharmacist is sought to work within a Major Trauma Centre offering tertiary services across a wide range of surgical specialties. The post supports integrated multidisciplinary working, progress toward consultant-level credentialing in a surgical specialty, and the use of non‑medical prescribing in inpatient and outpatient settings. The role also involves leading a team of advanced specialist pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, and managing the pharmacy service for the Surgery Care Group and associated surgical areas. The department is pursuing an ambitious 5-year strategy and workforce plan approved by the Trust Board.

This post will attract a Recruitment & Retention Premia (RRP) totaling £5,000, payable on appointment (covering 36 months) in addition to a relocation allowance (subject to eligibility). The RRP is for external candidates only and pro rata for part-time staff. Further information on the RRP and Relocation Allowance is available on request.

Further study and practice-based research are encouraged and supported within this role.

Main duties of the job

* Provide a high-quality patient-focused clinical pharmacy service for patients within the Surgery Care Group, ensuring effective deployment of pharmacy staff to meet Trust needs (patient safety, flow, medicines reconciliations and discharges).
* Act as an advanced specialist pharmacist to the Surgery Care Group within your chosen area of practice.
* Be the named directorate lead pharmacist for the Surgery Care Group, alongside the Lead Pharmacist for Critical Care, Anaesthetics, Pain and Theatres.
* Lead teaching and clinical supervision of pharmacy staff and other healthcare employees.
* Promote the safe use of medicines across the Care Group.
* Collaborate with the associate chief pharmacist to define roles for non-medical prescribers and advanced clinical practitioners.
* Work towards credentialing as a consultant pharmacist within a surgical specialty.
* Develop and manage delivery of pharmacy services, monitor drug expenditure and deliver financial savings.
* Represent the clinical pharmacy team at internal and external committees and forums (e.g., Drug and Therapeutics Committee, Medicines Safety Committee, Clinical Governance, Care Group operational meetings).
* Lead on implementation of NHSE commissioning decisions relating to new technologies, ensuring safe prescribing through protocols and guidelines.
* Participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics and MDTs; review prescriptions and communicate complex drug information to influence treatment options.
* Utilise non-medical prescribing and advanced practice skills across the care group in collaboration with the MDT.
* Lead monitoring, review and reporting of medicines-related incidents within the Surgery Care Group.
* Co-ordinate advanced specialist pharmacists and support wider Surgery pharmacy team (including band 6/7 pharmacists and technicians) to provide a safe, effective clinical pharmacy service.
* Ensure appropriate level of clinical pharmacy service for the Surgery Care Group; configure inductions and provide education and training to healthcare professionals, including medical students.
* Act as a role model as a clinical pharmacist and team leader within the multidisciplinary team.
* Practice as a Pharmacist Prescriber/Advanced Practitioner within the Service Line, maintaining professional competence and scope of practice at all times.
* Engage with Quality Improvement and practice research; develop and update clinical pharmacy policy relevant to Surgery Care group.
* Monitor and evaluate medicines-related protocols and guidelines; propose service changes where appropriate.
* Assist in the development and implementation of PGDs and non-medical prescribing initiatives where appropriate.
* Collaborate with external health and social care providers to form working partnerships across the wider healthcare system.


Advanced Specialist Pharmacist responsibilities

* Recommend appropriate therapy for individual patients when evidence is limited or contested, and contribute to antimicrobial surveillance and prescribing programs.
* Attend MDTs, ward rounds and specialty meetings to facilitate treatment decisions for highly complex patients.
* Promote compliance with local/national policies and formulary.
* Apply complex evidence base behind drug therapies; assess clinical requirements and request tests as needed.
* Support seamless transfer of patients between care settings.


Person Specification


Qualifications


Essential

* Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Pharmacy
* Current General Pharmaceutical Council registration
* Postgraduate Diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent
* Non-medical prescriber (or willing to undertake when requested)


Desirable

* Current registration with Royal Pharmaceutical Society
* Active involvement in Surgery & Theatres group within UKCPA or equivalent
* Member of UKCPA
* Postgraduate leadership qualification
* Postgraduate qualification in specialty


Knowledge & Experience


Essential

* Strong knowledge of clinical pharmacy and drug use across surgical and medical specialties
* Experience in multiple clinical specialties; provision of pharmaceutical care in Surgical Care areas (inpatient and outpatient)
* Demonstrated leadership and management experience within a pharmacy practice
* Excellent communication and report-writing skills; ability to influence senior clinicians and managers
* Experience of teaching, training and people development; policy and guideline development
* Experience with quality improvement and practice research
* Experience of supervising staff and projects (including audits and research)
* Ability to work within MDTs and multidisciplinary teams


Aptitude and Abilities


Essential

* Good communication skills (written and verbal) at all levels
* Time management skills


Desirable

* Potential for management ability
* Understanding of financial issues
