As Jewish Women’s Aid continues to see a rise in demand for our services, we have created the new role of Finance Director to support our internal capacity. This role will be critical in ensuring robust financial stewardship, transparency, and strategic planning. The Finance Director will be a key part of the senior leadership team and will support our mission through strong financial leadership and governance.
You will be a strategic and detail-focused finance professional with the ability to lead long-term financial planning while responding flexibly to emerging organisational needs. With significant experience in charity finance, you will bring a deep understanding of financial governance, compliance, and the challenges and opportunities of working in the nonprofit sector. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Jewish Women’s Aid (JWA) is seeking an experienced Finance Director to lead the organisation’s financial strategy, planning, and management. This role is vital in ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of our work, enabling us to support Jewish women and girls affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence.
The Finance Director will oversee all aspects of JWA’s financial operations, ensuring robust governance, compliance, and financial insight across the organisation. As a key member of the senior leadership team, you will help shape JWA’s strategic direction by providing expert financial guidance and supporting the organisation to achieve its mission.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Financial Leadership
Lead the financial strategy, planning, and analysis to support organisational goals.
Develop and monitor annual budgets in collaboration with the CEO and senior leaders and the treasurer.
Advise on financial risks, opportunities, and investment decisions.
Oversee cash flow management and financial forecasting
Work closely with fundraising teams to align income generation with financial planning and support with applications and reporting.
Governance, Compliance and Reporting
Lead financial reporting to the Board, Finance Subcommittee, and external stakeholders.
Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and Charity Commission requirements.
Lead the annual audit process and preparation of statutory accounts, liaising with external auditors.
Operational Financial Management
Manage financial controls and processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial operations.
Maintain effective systems for income tracking, restricted/unrestricted funds, and grants.
Oversee the preparation of regular management accounts and financial statements
Oversee cash flow, reserves, and financial forecasting to ensure sustainability.
Organisational Support and Team Management
Line manage the bookkeeper.
Work collaboratively with fundraising and programme teams on budgeting and reporting.
Work closely with CEO and Treasurer on budget, audit and other strategic financial tasks.
Support capacity building and financial literacy across the organisation.
Be an active member of SLT
Policy & Risk Management
Review and update the finance handbook and internal financial procedures.
Maintain the financial risk register and contribute to the organisation-wide register.
Ensure financial policies and procedures are consistently followed.
General
Maintain professional standards and commit to self-development as necessary for the role.
Assist in any area of JWA administration in the absence of colleagues
Attend and participate in staff meetings as required
Undertake other reasonable duties commensurate with the post as requested by the CEO or Treasurer.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
CIMA qualified accountant or qualified by experience.
Proven experience in a senior finance role within a charity, nonprofit or SME.
Strong understanding of charity finance, including SORP, restricted funding, and gift aid.
Experience of preparing management accounts, budgets, and leading audits.
Confident user of accounting software (e.g., Xero or QuickBooks) and Excel.
Strategic thinker with the ability to interpret complex data and make sound recommendations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to present financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Experience in line managing staff.
Desirable Skills & Experience
Experience of working within a culturally specific or faith-based organisation
Knowledge and understanding of the effects of domestic abuse and sexual violence on women and children.
Knowledge and understanding of the Jewish community in Britain.
Knowledge of charity fundraising and funding models.
Experience of liaising with trustees and supporting governance function
