About the General Counsel Role
The General Counsel will provide expert legal guidance, strategic vision, and manage legal issues across the RNLI. Working with the board and senior leadership, this role involves high-level decision-making and strategic input for the future of the RNLI. The position is based at the RNLI Lifeboat Support Centre in Poole, with a hybrid working arrangement. Key responsibilities include:
1. Contributing to the development and delivery of RNLI’s strategy and vision as a Director.
2. Leading and delivering high-quality legal services, compliance advice, and company secretarial services to ensure a resilient organization.
3. Managing strategic-level risk and providing leadership in this area, ensuring clarity of executive responsibilities.
4. Representing the ET to external regulators and legislative bodies, including the Trustee Board and Committees.
5. Leading legal assurance strategies at the RNLI Executive and Trustee levels.
6. Managing budgets, setting measures, targets, and objectives to ensure effective delivery and tracking ROI.
7. Identifying opportunities for process and practice improvements, fostering innovation within the team.
8. Recruiting, managing, and developing direct reports to maximize performance.
9. Collaborating across RNLI to build relationships, support, and provide constructive challenge.
10. Implementing plans, resources, and systems to execute the legal strategy effectively.
11. Overseeing the development and delivery of legal services, insurance services, and governance frameworks.
12. Managing relationships with suppliers and regulators to ensure compliance and mutual expectations are met.
Minimum Requirements
* Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Executive with over 12 years of PQE or equivalent experience.
* Strategic leadership experience at the board level.
* Proven ability to handle varied caseloads with minimal supervision.
* Experience in an in-house legal organization and managing a team of legal professionals across specialties.
* Experience managing performance against budgets, targets, and organizational strategies.
* Ability to lead and inspire a senior legal team.
* Strong background in governance, regulatory, and risk issues.
Note: Candidates unable to commute to Poole three days a week or with less than 9 years of senior legal experience in the UK are not eligible to apply.
