Maths Teacher – Secondary PRU (SEMH / Short-Stay Provision)

For teachers who thrive in challenging, high-impact environments

A specialist secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) is seeking a committed and resilient Maths Teacher to join its team, supporting young people aged 11–16 who have been placed on a short-stay basis due to significant behavioural challenges.

This is a demanding but highly rewarding role for a teacher who is confident, calm under pressure, and motivated by helping pupils stabilise, re-engage and prepare for their next educational step.

About the school and pupils

This setting operates as a short-term PRU, supporting pupils at points of crisis in their education. Many have experienced permanent or fixed-term exclusion, severe disruption to schooling, and present with very challenging behaviour linked to SEMH needs, trauma, anxiety, ADHD or autism.

Class sizes are intentionally small, with a strong focus on:

* Clear boundaries and routines

* High staff presence and teamwork

* De-escalation, consistency and relational practice

Pupils may arrive disengaged or resistant to learning, but with the right approach, many make rapid progress in confidence, behaviour and academic engagement during their placement.

The role

You will deliver Maths across Key Stages 3 and 4, adapting the curriculum to meet pupils where they are emotionally and academically. Teaching in this setting requires flexibility, emotional intelligence and the ability to reset and refocus each day.

Key responsibilities include:

* Planning and delivering structured, engaging Maths lessons for pupils with high behavioural needs

* Managing and responding to challenging behaviour using restorative, trauma-informed and de-escalation strategies

* Building positive, professional relationships quickly in a short-stay context

* Working closely with behaviour support staff, pastoral teams, therapists and senior leaders

* Contributing to assessments, reviews and reintegration planning

Why work in a PRU short-stay setting?

* Teaching without large classes or unnecessary bureaucracy

* Strong emphasis on teamwork and shared responsibility for behaviour

* Extensive support with behaviour management—teachers are never on their own

* The opportunity to make a visible, immediate impact during a critical period in a pupil’s life

Working pattern and pay

* Monday to Friday, full-time

* Paid to scale, in line with teacher pay and conditions

Who this role is for

This role is best suited to a resilient, reflective Maths Teacher who is comfortable working with highly challenging behaviour and understands that progress may look different in a PRU setting. Experience in PRUs, SEMH or alternative provision is desirable, but not essential for candidates with the right attitude, emotional intelligence and commitment to safeguarding and inclusion.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
