We're looking for a proactive, solutions-driven Infrastructure Engineer to join our collaborative IT team at West Midlands Fire Service, playing a central role in developing and supporting the systems that keep our organisation running 24/7.
Responsibilities
maintain and support infrastructure systems across our premises, virtual, and cloud environments
deliver infrastructure projects on time and to quality standards
provide 2nd/3rd line support and manage incidents, requests, and changes in line with ITIL processes
ensure compliance with security and data protection standards (NIST, cyber essentials)
patch, upgrade, and monitor core infrastructure services
support systems including server environments, active directory, backup solutions, firewalls, telephony, and endpoint protection.
Experience and skills
Essential skills or experience
strong understanding of IT infrastructure operations and support
proficient in Windows/Unix environments, Microsoft 365, Active Directory
experience with firewalls, server environments, endpoint protection, and backup systems
working knowledge of network infrastructure (LAN/WAN/Wi-Fi)
familiarity with ITIL practices (incident, change, release management)
excellent troubleshooting and documentation skills
strong verbal and written communication abilities
serve as 2nd/ 3rd line escalation point for complex incidents and technical problems
able to manage projects, suppliers, and competing priorities effectively.
Desirable skills or experience
ITIL qualification
strong initiative, dependable, and capable of working without close supervision
confident and clear communicator, both technical and non-technical audiences
experience in a 24/7 or emergency services environment
experience delivering technical training and creating documentation.
