Radiology Department Assistant (Ultrasound)

Job Summary
To support patients during ultrasound examinations, assist other imaging assistants, mentor junior RDAs, and act as a point of contact for advice and guidance. This is a rotational role through obstetric and non‑obstetric ultrasound.
Responsibilities
* Assist patients during ultrasound examinations and carry out examinations as required.
* Act as a mentor and role model to junior RDAs, providing advice and guidance.
* Book patients and manage ultrasound room diaries, including training junior staff on booking procedures.
* Support radiology staff, supervise junior RDAs, and work as part of a team.
* Plan and prioritise own workload, working flexibly including evenings and weekends.
* Update patient records using computerised and manual methods after each examination.
* Maintain patient confidentiality, perform patient preparation, and ensure rooms are clean and stocked.
* Report incidents or potential accidents in line with Trust policy.
* Coordinate patient arrival and departure, including manual handling and chaperoning as required.
* Prepare ultrasound rooms and equipment, using aseptic technique and cleaning between patients.
* Support and assist Sonographers and Radiologists during scanning and ultrasound‑guided injections.
* Liaise with ward staff, porters, patient transport, and other teams for workflow and inpatient orders.
* Assist in emergency situations and provide empathetic support when needed.
* Rotate between all sites within PAHT and organise inpatient scans according to staff availability.
* Check and report on stock levels, and document changes.
* Understand and comply with legal obligations, including Data Protection Act, Health and Safety, COSHH and local radiation rules.
* Carry out other duties as requested by senior management and participate in performance appraisals.
* Maintain a professional front and act as an ambassador for the profession and the department.
Key Qualifications & Skills
* NVQ Level 3 in acute care or equivalent experience.
* Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
* Experience in ultrasound and with difficult and challenging situations.
* Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
* Experience with mentoring and training (desirable).
* NHS experience as a healthcare support worker (desirable).
* The Care Certificate and Higher Development Award (desirable).
Contract & Benefits
• Band 3 – £26,240 to £27,928 a year.
