Tarbolton Community Council & the Role’s Impact

Tarbolton Community Council SCIO is a registered charity (SC054279). The Tarbolton Community Council (Constituted Community Group) formed to support a community-led Action Plan and the charity was founded to help build a new community hub on the site of the old community centre. The overall aim of the charity is to make Tarbolton a better place to live, work, and play.


Responsibilities

* Keep the SCIO’s constitution and governance documents current; flag required updates and advise the Board on drafting amendments/resolutions.
* Advise trustees on their legal duties under the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and relevant OSCR guidance.
* Support OSCR compliance: annual return/trustees’ report checks (content only), name/objects changes, reorganisations, and any required notifications.
* Advise on meetings & decisions: quorums, special resolutions, proper minuting, and recording/handling conflicts of interest.
* Input on property/asset matters: community asset transfer steps, heads of terms, and red-flag issues in title/lease documents (refer complex work to a solicitor).
* Maintain clear boundaries: provide advice and document reviews only; escalate/refer anything requiring reserved legal services or representation.


What you bring (desirable)

* Qualified solicitor (Scotland) or significant charity/governance experience; retired/semi-retired welcome.
* Familiarity with Scottish charity regulation (OSCR), governance best practice, and basic data-protection considerations.
* Ability to explain legal risks in plain English and propose proportionate, practical mitigations.
