As a world leading centre for research and clinical training, we at the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) are keen to attract and cultivate the most promising clinical researchers at all career stages.
The AHSC Post-Doctoral, Post-CCT Research Fellowship (APPRF) is a rare opportunity for Consultant level doctors aspiring to progress their research careers at Imperial University. The award funds high quality clinical academics who are within 1 year of completing Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or maximum of 5 years post-CCT to work towards intermediate fellowship / clinician scientist programmes. Through the Fellowship, you will receive funding for up to 3 years protected time to conduct research (both salary and consumables) and write applications for your next fellowship, alongside a 50% clinical role within an AHSC linked NHS Trust. This opportunity is available in 3 defined specialty areas and designed for individuals with the potential to become leaders in academic medicine with a commitment to conducting research at Imperial College London.
What you would be doing
Research
To develop, plan and carry out research in accordance with the agreed project aims to obtain preliminary data for future applications
To submit an Intermediate or Advanced Fellowship application.
To attend meetings and report progress on the project, (written and oral) both within the University and externally
To identify and develop suitable techniques and apparatus for the collection and analysis of data
To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times including maintaining accurate and complete records of all findings
To draft publications for submission to refereed journals and grant applications
To develop research collaborations within the University and the wider community
To complete and comply with reporting and progress requirements as requested by the funders and take part in Audit
To direct, lead, or contribute to, a research area at the highest scientifically rigorous levels
To be responsible for accurate record keeping and documentation of results, and for preparing research reports and papers arising from the research
To collaborate with and strengthen links with colleagues within the Faculty of Medicine across all departments and contribute to the work of the Faculty and Imperial
Clinical responsibilities
It is expected that the post holder will devote the equivalent of 5 programmed activities per week to clinical activities. Further details in the Job Plan.
To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities
To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post
Clinical Governance
To review clinical outcomes in designated areas using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Divisional Director
To participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented
To work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and service developments as delegated by the Clinical Divisional Director
To collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the NHS Trust's translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.

What we are looking for
To be eligible you must have been awarded a PhD or MD before starting the APPRF and hold a CCT or be within 12 months of acquiring CCT (or equivalent) at the time of application and have CCTd by the time of starting. The award is for a maximum of 3 years undertaking part-time research whilst maintaining clinical work ~2.5 days per week (subject to being offered an Honorary contract at one of our partner NHS Trusts, which will require you to undergo some additional clinical consultant processes to meet Trust and Royal College requirements).
The Fellowship is funded jointly by the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine academic Departments and our NHS clinical partners. APPRF opportunities are available in 3 clinical specialty priority areas:
Cardiometabolic medicine - for applicants with CCT in Cardiology, with clinical work at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, hosted academically by the National Heart & Lung Institute
General Adult Psychiatry - with clinical work at Central & North West London NHS Foundation Trust, CNWL (for applicants with CCT in in older adult, forensic, general adult psychiatry - but must be discussed and agreed with clinical division and academic department), research hosted in Department of Brain Sciences
Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery - for applicants with CCT in General Surgery, with clinical work to be agreed with Head of Department of Surgery and Cancer
The application process comprises 2 stages.
Stage 1: Speak to the relevant Imperial academic and NHS clinical departments to discuss your research and clinical interests and establish whether they are able to support your application. Get their formal approval and estimated research costings for the project. Closing date Wednesday 18 February 2026
Stage 2: Submit your approved APPRF application proposal, together with your CV and completed Job application form. Closing date: Wednesday 25 February 2026

Salary Range:
Pay scales (full time) plus £2,162 London Weighting (*applicants normally appointed at the first threshold of the salary scale)
The APPRF Fellowship is available on a maximum 3-year fixed term basis and is offered in the following specialty areas only :
