Senior Biomedical Scientist - Cellular Pathology/Histology

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories for an enthusiastic, experienced and highly motivated Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our Cellular Pathology Immunocytochemistry (ICC) and Molecular Pathology service. You will play a key role in delivering a timely, high-quality diagnostic service within a modern, fast-paced pathology environment, supporting both routine and companion diagnostic testing.

As a senior member of the team, you will support the day-to-day organisation, management and supervision of laboratory workflows, quality assurance and staff training, providing expert technical and scientific leadership across immunocytochemistry and molecular pathology.

You will ensure compliance with UKAS/ISO 15189 and other regulatory standards. Applicants will have extensive experience in ICC and/or Molecular Pathology, with a strong understanding of normal and pathological tissue morphology and a commitment to continuous improvement and service development.


Main duties of the job

As a Senior Biomedical Scientist in the LCL ICC and Molecular Pathology Service you will lead, supervise and motivate staff to deliver high-quality routine and specialist diagnostics.

You will support the Service Managers by assessing, implementing and validating new equipment, techniques and assays, with a key focus on developing and optimising companion diagnostic ICC staining. You will oversee and participate in specialised testing including FISH, providing interpretive analysis grounded in sound knowledge of tissue morphology and the scientific principles underpinning the methods used.

The role requires autonomous working and effective problem-solving of specialist ICC and genomic platforms, alongside driving continual improvement through innovation, training and development to help the department meet NHS cancer targets, contributing to senior management meetings and deputising when required.

Job responsibilities

The Senior Biomedical Scientist in ICC and Molecular Pathology is a highly skilled and experienced professional, capable of performing routine and specialised tasks in a knowledgeable way to assist in the diagnosis of disease, to determine their existence or absence, as well as to monitor treatment effectiveness.

The post holder will play an active role in the performance of routine and specialised tasks involved in the LCL ICC and Molecular Pathology Service, delivering a high level of quality and working to take into consideration health and safety regulations and financial viability. The successful candidate will lead the team to ensure that the daily workload is completed efficiently while adhering to all departmental policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and be required to train and educate a wide range of staff in the use and application of immunocytochemical and genomic procedures in Cellular Pathology.

The post holder will be required to meet the requirements of all internal and External Quality Assurance (EQA) and United Kingdom accreditation service (UKAS) standards and uphold the department's professional reputation in the Trust. Most importantly, the post holder will be patient centred.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* HPC registration
* MSc or relevant experience
* Evidence of continuing professional development


Experience

* Relevant post registration experience in a histopathology laboratory
* In depth specialist knowledge of histology
* Evidence of practical experience in: non-gynae cytology, immunocytochemistry, renal and muscle biopsies.
* Previous supervisory experience
* Experience of in-house training of staff
* Experience in managing health and safety


Knowledge

* In depth specialist knowledge of histology
* Demonstrate knowledge of patient confidentiality
* Working knowledge of computers
* Understand and implements quality assurance
* Understanding of the need for health and safety in relation to themselves and others


Skills

* Evidence of ability to interact with other groups of staff
* Evidence of good verbal skillsMotivational skills
* Evidence of ability to write in-house documents
