Job purpose

University Centre Somerset (UCS) College Group Bridgwater College are looking for an outstanding individual with experience to join our delivery team. You will need to be a motivated and enthusiastic professional, proactive, student-centred individual who can provide expertise to further enhance our teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum development. This particular role is required for UCS College Group, Bridgwater College to fulfil the growing skills demand in order to meet local and national workforce requirements, for current and future civils projects such as Hinkley Point C power station.

We welcome applications from individuals without educational sector experience as support and training will be given to the successful candidate. Existing training or educational sector experience would be an advantage. UCS College Group are the delivery partner for the National College for Nuclear (NCfN) southern hub, supported by its Energy Skills and Advanced Engineering Centres, The Welding Centre of Excellence, the Construction Skills and Innovation Centre at Cannington, a new University Centre in Taunton. The successful candidate will be based at our Bridgwater College. This college is home to the Welding Centre of Excellence which focuses on the teaching, learning and assessment for the welding industry. This includes development, quality and testing of welding skills to meet employer’s on-site requirements. This provides an exceptional learning experience through both practical and knowledge-based study.


Job Responsibilities

Training and Assessment

Plan, prepare and deliver highly effective training, in the workplace and college. Develop and take responsibility for the delivery of individual training plans tailored to learner needs. Undertake apprenticeship programme observations, predominantly in the workplace but also in college where required. Deliver high quality assessment and feedback to exceed awarding body quality standards. Complete workplace three-way reviews with learners and employers, recording progress and setting targets for the next learning period. Provide Additional Learning Support as required, to enable all learners to make positive progress towards timely success. Promote opportunities for personal development that prepares learners for their intended job, career aim and/or personal goals. Support learners to continually progress their knowledge and skills of English and maths. Prepare learners for End Point Assessment on their apprenticeship programme.

Co-ordination and Support

Participate in learner interviews, plan and deliver ‘keep warm’ activities, enrolment, and induction activities. Contribute to internal quality assurance as required. Contribute to the completion of all relevant documentation to progress the signing up and recording of new learners on the programme and the progression of learners to End Point Assessment. Compile and maintain documentation that records the progress of learners on programme against specified targets and provide evidence and reports in relation to this as required.

Other responsibilities

Working with Course Leaders, Specialist Trainer Assessors and Deputy Head, contribute to developing the curriculum and commercial offer to ensure all programmes reflect current industry requirements and developments. Promote training opportunities to employers and contribute to the development of new business. Attend Team, Department and College wide meetings and events both on and off college premises. Participate in staff development activities to support Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and maintain a CPD log to evidence personal development and impact on practice. Participate in staff recruitment campaigns and interviews. To support and promote the safeguarding agenda at BTC to ensure learners, visitors and staff are safeguarded. To support and promote equality and diversity at BTC to ensure equality of opportunity for all students, visitors and staff and the elimination of discriminatory practices. To maintain and promote a healthy and safe environment at BTC to ensure students, visitors and staff are safe from harm. To partake in marketing and recruitment activities for the Department, including open evenings, school tasters and visits, student profiling for publications etc. These may occur offsite. Any other duties connected with the post as are reasonably required from time to time.


Person Specification

Hold a recognised qualification in Welding or Welding and Fabrication – (such as having completed apprenticeship). Possess current Heavy Industry experience (minimum 8 years) and have up-to-date, subject specialist industry knowledge. Industry types include but are not limited to - Nuclear (Power or Defence) – Power Stations - Petro Chemical or similar. Hold (or have evidence of having held previously) welder qualifications to ISO960 or equivalent. Visual Weld Inspection Certification CSWIP 3.0 (or equivalent) or be willing to work towards one within the role. Experience of welding a range material types and welding processes. In both Pipe and Plate. Hold the minimum of a Level 3 teaching qualification or be willing to work towards achieving within the role. Hold an assessor qualification (D32/D33/A1) or be willing to work towards one. Have the ability to motivate learners and ensure they achieve. High levels of motivation and have the ability to use own initiative. Have the ability to travel, a full driving licence and access to a vehicle on a daily basis.

Qualification or experience in metal fabrication techniques. Demonstrate basic IT skills and be willing to develop these within the role. Have the ability to develop strong professional relationships with employers and colleagues. Current or recent experience of teaching, training, or assessment.
