Please note: this job is only available to current employees of Lancaster University

The Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (FHASS) is seeking to appoint an Associate Dean (AD) for Global. This is an exciting opportunity to take up a significant leadership role and to work to deliver a sustainable future for the humanities, arts and social sciences at Lancaster University.

This senior leadership role is open to internal applicants only who must be existing members of academic staff within the Faculty and also hold a substantive post that exceeds the duration of the term of the appointment. Applicants will normally be at senior lecturer level or above, however appointments will be made depending on the context, objectives and circumstances of the Faculty at the time and on the skills and experience of particular candidates.

Term of office

You will be expected to begin in role in August 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position amounts to a 0.5fte appointment; this will be fully reflected in workload allocation models - and is usually held for a four-year term, e.g. unless extended or renewed within the University’s leadership roles appointment process. At the end of their term, the role holder ceases their Associate Dean responsibilities, returning to their substantive role. The University reserves the right, in exceptional circumstances, to end the term of office earlier than the scheduled expiry date, following a performance review by the Executive Dean and with the agreement of the relevant Pro-Vice-Chancellor, at which point they would revert to their substantive position.

The role

This is an opportunity to take on a senior leadership role within the Faculty. The role of Associate Dean for Global provides academic leadership for the Faculty, to develop strategies and shape our global visibility, partnerships and reputation, and inspire and engage Faculty colleagues in the delivery of these. The role is also an opportunity to gain valuable insight and experience in working with relevant central University colleagues and divisions. You will represent the Faculty within and beyond the University.

The Associate Dean for Global will provide leadership to the Faculty in all aspects of internationalisation. The AD for Global will join a new FHASS Leadership Team and will have significant responsibility for shaping the future and direction of the Faculty. This will entail leading on strategic projects, management of the growth of FHASS’s global presence and developing meaningful international partnerships. The role has endless potential and represents a significant career opportunity to innovate and play a major role in re-creating a FHASS equipped to take on the challenges of the mid-twenty-first century. The work of the Associate Dean for Global will be supported directly by Executive and Deputy Deans and broader Faculty Leadership Team.

Further details of the role and its responsibilities and the required/desirable skills are included Associate Dean for Global Job Description and Person Specification.

Reward and recognition

Salary supplement

The Associate Dean will receive a non-superannuable salary supplement equivalent in value to one (for a Professor) or two (for a Senior Lecturer) increment(s) on their salary scale. Their performance and progress in the role will be reviewed both during and at the end of the term of appointment with a successful outcome resulting in the consolidation of the supplement into base salary (and therefore will become superannuable). In addition, the role attracts a non-superannuable allowance of £3,000 per annum which can be paid into their salary or their research account.

Application Process

Please submit your application via the Stonefish system by 23.59 on 23 July 2025 in the following format:

1. A covering letter (2 x A4 max of text) to include an expression of interest, noting why you wish to apply, your intended vision for and approach to the role, giving examples relating to the areas of responsibility listed in the job description.

2. A separate document articulating how you would intend to approach the areas listed under Essential and Desirable skills, noting any relevant experience, and what professional development you would welcome in support.

3. Your up-to-date CV.

Please note that references are not required.

Interviews of shortlisted candidates are expected to take place in person on 30 July 2025, with the panel being chaired by the Pro Vice Chancellor Global and including the FHASS Executive Dean.

We are committed to promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion across the Faculty, and supporting family-friendly, flexible and agile working policies. We encourage applications from all diversity groups.

Enquiries

Ed would be pleased to discuss with prospective applicants the vision and challenges for the role and the possibilities for career development. Prospective applicants may also wish to approach the FHASS Deputy Dean, Chakravarthi Ram-Prasad, via Peter Stevens for insight into what it is like to be a member of the Faculty Senior Leadership Team.
