Main duties of the job

The Matron will have operational and strategic responsibility working in collaboration with the Deputy Divisional Directors and Clinical Leads to ensure services are delivered in a culture where clinical quality, service improvement and financial accountability are paramount. While responsible for the nursing workforce and the delivery of safe staffing, the role expands to influencing and shaping all areas of the service line business through leadership and role modelling. The Matron will ensure all clinical, quality, safety, financial and workforce standards are agreed and delivered. The Matron will provide quality assurance, ensuring the fundamentals of care are delivered effectively and efficiently against recognised best practice. This will facilitate continuous review/peer review, benchmarking, improving nursing services and ensure clinical effectiveness.


Job responsibilities

* Support and drive the implementation and maintenance of safety, quality, clinical effectiveness and patient experience through the implementation and monitoring of key standards and outcome measures to deliver safe and effective harm‑free care.
* Act as the expert in delivering the quality and safety agenda that is unique to nursing, implicit in this is continuous improvement and a reduction in harm.
* Utilise expert analytical and critical thinking skills to ensure that care and service improvement agendas are innovative, contemporaneous and clinically effective. Integrate cutting‑edge information technology to support clinically effective and safe care.
* Develop and utilise monitoring tools and techniques to provide assurance against key performance indicators and care standards both within the Division and across the Trust.
* Monitor and analyse data and trends to establish early recognition of areas of concern to develop and improve services.
* Develop a culture of listening, whereby patients, relatives and carers and staff are central to service delivery and development.
* In partnership with the service line triumvirate and with the Divisional Director of Nursing, lead, coordinate and facilitate the development, implementation and review of standards, policies, procedures, competencies, and clinical guidelines with the multi‑professional team.
* Act as a clinical expert in relation to emerging themes, for example safeguarding, vulnerable children and adults, mental health, sexual exploitation to ensure patients with complex needs receive equitable care.
* Ensure the governance agenda within the service line encompasses learning, continual quality monitoring and improvement that focuses on reducing risk, harm and developing efficiency and quality in care.
* Ensure the appropriate use of the Infection Prevention and Control Team, ensuring practice adheres to national standards and emerging advances in care. Undertake inspections of clinical areas across the Trust to monitor and maintain standards.

Person Specification


Qualifications – Essential

* Registered Nurse (Active NMC Registration) at Level 6 (BSc)
* Masters level education
* Relevant speciality experience
* Recognised management or leadership qualification or demonstrable experience


Qualifications – Desirable

* Quality improvement training
* Non‑medical prescriber or willing to work towards


Experience – Essential

* In‑depth experience of leading and managing teams of nursing staff across different levels and specialities
* Significant experience of working and influencing in a multi‑disciplinary environment with a range of health professionals
* Experience in workforce management, planning and development
* Demonstrable governance experience and exposure
* Knowledge of Safeguarding Adults/Children including the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards


Experience – Desirable

* Experience of writing protocols, guidelines, policies, assessing clinical competencies
