Medical Laboratory Assistant / Phlebotomist – Grimsby
An opportunity has arisen within the Pathology Department at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby for a full‑time Medical Laboratory Assistant post based in the Blood Sciences Pathology Department. The role supports the Pathology Department and is suitable for individuals who enjoy a variety of duties. Experience of computer input work is essential and applicants should be able to demonstrate current skills.
The candidate should be literate and numerate, GCSE Grade C or above in mathematics and English would be an advantage as would previous laboratory or health care experience and familiarity with medical terminology.
Hours: The majority of the work is undertaken between 09:00 and 21:00. There is also a requirement to participate in the Out‑Of‑Hours rota, which includes early and late shifts, along with weekend days and Bank Holidays.
Main duties of the job
* Receipt and Processing of pathology samples
* Entering patient requests using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
* Assist in the provision of the phlebotomy service to both inpatients and outpatients
* Accurately use a calibrated pipette
* Loading/unloading and filing of samples
* Housekeeping and maintaining Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
* Dealing with referred work to and from other laboratories
* Communicating results and other queries with service users by telephone or other means
Person Specification – Education and Qualifications
* Good standard of literacy and numeracy
* Evidence of good IT skills
* GCSE or equivalent qualification in 3 subjects, including science
* Other science or healthcare related qualification
Occupational Experience
* Experience of the NHS or a caring environment
* Demonstrate application to repetitive work
* Previous use of analytical / diagnostic equipment
* Overall suitability for post
