Responsibilities
* Support the microbiology department in providing diagnostic services.
* Data entry (primary duty).
* Deal with telephone enquiries.
* Perform equipment maintenance and routine troubleshooting of general laboratory equipment.
* Maintain stock control and laboratory waste disposal.
* Assist with preparatory work for manual and automated analytical processes.
* Check samples before processing for identification, status and suitability for diagnostic investigations.
* Undertake complex manual, semi-automated and automated procedures under indirect supervision.
* Prepare samples for sending to external reference laboratories.
* Issue results in accordance with departmental SOPs.
* Attend meetings as directed.
* Undertake work according to Standard Operating Procedures.
* Maintain awareness of changes and developments within the section/department.
* Receive and handle a wide range of enquiries, in person or by telephone, including matters of a confidential or sensitive nature.
* Basic communication with patients and staff ensuring compliance with confidentiality rules and data protection act.
This position will not support IBMS registration portfolios and is not a route to becoming a Biomedical Scientist.
We may offer a bank role if you are unsuccessful for the substantive role.
