Lead Occupational Therapist

The CINSS team is a community based interdisciplinary therapy team; supporting the early discharge of patients post discharge from hospital with a neurological diagnosis. Based at Newfield House providing patient centred rehabilitation to patients in the Coventry area aged 18 years and over. You will be an integral part of a friendly and supportive team working with people in their own homes, our out‑patient clinic and gym.

This post offers the successful candidate opportunity to consolidate current skills working closely with the Clinical Lead, Service Manager and Therapy Leadership Team to deliver standards of care and service delivery.

This post will provide you with an opportunity to develop clinical skills managing patients’ rehabilitation needs, develop interdisciplinary team working, and management of a team of therapy staff.

This post would suit an experienced Neuro Occupational Therapist who is looking to work within a dynamic and friendly team who are committed to providing an excellent patient‑centered service, whilst supporting continuous development of clinical skills through joint working, access to a comprehensive in‑service training programme.

The successful candidate will have evidence of post‑graduate neuro rehabilitation experience and sound clinical reasoning. There is expectation that the candidate will be able to evidence specialist clinical experience/practice and be committed to providing high standards of care.

An inclusive team approach and excellent communication skills are essential. You will be expected to work independently and effectively with a secondary care stroke team to ensure safe and effective discharge into the community, prioritising your workload and time, and supporting others to do the same.


Responsibilities

* To liaise closely with healthcare professionals from UHCW and Warwickshire, Integrated and Community Care Services.
* To follow defined stroke and neurological care pathways and other relevant rehabilitation pathways.
* To assess for and plan, implement and evaluate outcome focused interventions/treatment.
* To provide a comprehensive range of evidenced based assessment and treatment to patients.
* To support the Clinical Lead and Service Lead with professional leadership within the team.
* To support the Service Lead with day-to-day operational leadership of the team in conjunction with Lead therapists in the team.


Communication

* Ensure excellent communication with client’s carers, demonstrating ability to deliver difficult diagnoses and prognosis with tact and empathy, managing distressed or aggressive clients or carers.
* Demonstrate skills in dealing with challenging behaviour, such as Alzheimer’s disease, depression and aggressiveness of clients or carers/relatives.
* Take a lead role as an Occupational Therapist at interdisciplinary meetings to ensure that the appropriate occupational therapy elements are integrated in the overall patient management plan.
* Liaise and maintain good communication with all professionals and agencies involved in the care of each patient to ensure a seamless service. To provide complex written reports and attend case conferences as required.
* Build and maintain effective communication networks with patients, carers, the interdisciplinary team and other health workers and agencies.
* Network nationally across other rehabilitation providers and educators for the development of best practice.
* Promote awareness of the role of Occupational Therapy and the CINSS service.
* To be consulted as an expert source of information by the team seeking advice/information.
* Demonstrate highly developed persuasive, motivational and reassuring skills to achieve patient co‑operation, attain set goals and facilitate patients to manage their condition independently.
* Provide and receive complex and sensitive information, verbally, written and /or electronically (where available), to and from consultants, GP’s, patients, colleagues, other members of the MDT and other agencies.


Analytical and Judgemental Skills / Freedom to Act

* To have advanced knowledge of stroke/neurological conditions.
* To have general knowledge of models of practice and their application with this patient group; to enable the training of others (including carers) to a given competency.
* To be responsible to the Clinical Lead.
* Professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own workload, including the management of patients in your clinical care.
* Work to the standards set out within the College of Occupational Therapists and University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire Trust.
* To be familiar with and adhere to the Policies and Procedures of the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire Trust and CINSS.


Physical Skills

* To have moving and handling skills in order to move, position and treat patients with physical and cognitive impairments.
* To have the skills to use a keyboard to navigate Y drives and to write complex reports.
* Demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpatory sense for assessment and manual treatment.
