Location: Oliver Close, West Thurrock, Essex, RM20 3ED Hours: 37 hours per week Start Date: 23 February 2026 End Date: Initially for 3 months extended after review Pay Rates: PAYE: £17.38 per hour Umbrella/Ltd: £22.58 per hour About the Client Thurrock Council’s Waste Services team sits within the Place Directorate and is responsible for delivering high‑quality waste collection, recycling and street scene services across the borough. The service is committed to maintaining clean, safe neighbourhoods and providing reliable, customer‑focused operations for residents and businesses. The Role The Waste Collection Round Leader (HGV) will lead a waste collection round, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient delivery of domestic and commercial waste services. This is a physically demanding role involving both HGV driving and manual labour. You will oversee daily operations, support crew members and ensure all work is completed to required standards while representing the Council professionally within the community. Key Responsibilities Lead a waste collection round, ensuring safe and timely completion of daily routes Drive HGV vehicles in line with legislation, Council policies and road safety standards Carry out manual handling duties, including loading and moving waste containers Support and guide collection crew members, promoting teamwork and safe working practices Complete daily vehicle checks and report defects promptly Ensure compliance with health and safety procedures and operational protocols Maintain accurate records of route completion, incidents and service variations Provide professional customer service when interacting with residents and businesses Report issues such as contamination, access problems or missed collections Contribute to a positive, safe and efficient working environment Candidate Requirements Valid HGV Category C licence Valid CPC qualification Experience in waste collection, refuse operations or similar manual labour environments Ability to lead and support a small team Strong awareness of health and safety and safe vehicle operation Physically fit and able to undertake repetitive manual handling tasks Reliable, punctual and committed to delivering high‑quality public services Good communication skills and a professional approach
