JOB SUMMARY
/MAIN PURPOSE:
To maintain the operations of the laboratory in supporting qualified Healthcare Scientists in pre-analytical preparation, equipment maintenance, post analytical duties.
MAIN DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Receive & sort samples and record relevant information regarding transport conditions according to SOPs
2. Undertake the routine and non -routine preparation and examination of samples received in the laboratory, according to SOPs & methods
3. Assist with the preparation & processing of samples for Internal Quality Control (IQC), Uncertainty of Measurement (UOM) and External Quality Assurance schemes (EQAS)
4. Use all aspects of the laboratory computer system relating to sample registration and examination
5. Perform microtomy on histological samples using both automatic and semi-automatic microtomes
6. Be competent in the handling and processing of small biopsy samples
7. Daily preparation of equipment / instruments
8. Participate in stock checks to ensure that there is sufficient stock in the laboratory to allow timely sample processing.
9. Process orders for the laboratories.
10. Supervise ATO / MLA staff and assist in their training
11. Take responsibility for monitoring the status of laboratory equipment re temperature; fans; calibration / verification etc.
12. Work in a safe manner in accordance with the Laboratory's Health and Safety Policies
13. Contribute to the care, maintenance and security of the laboratory premises and equipment
14. Assist with virus protection of computers, through understanding of the Trust's IT policies
15. Answer telephone queries
16. Maintain confidentiality (of sample results) in accordance with the Data Protection Act
17. Undertake filing request forms and other clerical duties ( photocopying); photographic recording of samples (as required) and their electronic storage.
18. Support appropriate income generation contracts for the Laboratory
19. Assist with quality control
20. Ensure the return of specific equipment tested by the laboratory to clients
21. Participate in Continuous Professional Development in line with KSF and work towards gaining further knowledge through certificate level training and short courses. This will be done through Personal Contribution Plan & Annual Staff Development review.
22. Participate in a 24 hr service, which will include extended working day, overnight weekend and Public holidays work as part of the conditioned hr week
23. Must adhere to all Policies and Procedures within the Belfast Trust
24. Perform any other duties required by the line manager commensurate with grade
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
25. 2 GCSE's (Grades A-C) in Maths and English or equivalent PLUS 3 years relevant laboratory experience
OR
26. 4 GCSE's (Grades A-C) including Maths and English or equivalent PLUS relevant laboratory experience OR
27. NVQ Level 3 in a science related subject or equivalent PLUS relevant laboratory experience
OR
28. BTEC National Diploma in an Applied Science or equivalent plus relevant laboratory experience
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
29. GCSE Science subjects
30. Basic computer experience with basic typing skills.
31. Experience of working in Cellular Pathology
Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment. This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Organisation which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.
