IGCSE/A Level English Language/Literature Teacher
The International British School of Bucharest (IBSB) has an opening for an experienced Key Stage 4 & 5, IGCSE and A Level English Literature and Language teacher, starting August 18, 2025.
IBSB OVERVIEW
Located in the city centre, IBSB is a school with a reputation for academic and sporting excellence, being the first British DfE-inspected school in Romania, the first international school accredited by the Romanian Ministry of Education, a fully accredited member of COBIS & AoBSO, the first fully accredited HPL school in Romania, and the first NACE Challenge Award School in Romanian. Inspected by ISI in September 2022, IBSB was awarded the highest rating of 'Excellent' for the 'Quality of Education' provided, with 95% of graduates in 2021 being offered places in the top 5% of universities worldwide. The school has 500 students (65% Romanian and 35% international, from 30+ countries).
LIFE IN ROMANIA
Romania is without a doubt one of the nicest countries in Europe to live and work. Romanians are warm, friendly people, very welcoming and well-educated, with most speaking 2 or more languages, including English.
The lifestyle in Romania is one of 4 seasons, with beautiful beaches, the last remaining mountain wilderness in Europe, a wide selection of ski fields located just 90+ mins from Bucharest, beautiful old Germanic-styled towns with coble-stoned streets, a rich scattering of castles and monasteries, and more sunny days than rain. In fact, King Charles III has two houses here, saying it is one of his favourite places to visit - it was the first country he visited post-coronation.
It is also centrally located within the EU, with low-cost flights, such as Ryanair and Wizzair, departing to most major cities for under 100 euros for early bookings, including return flights to the UK. You can also save a considerable portion of your monthly salary.
LIFE IN BUCHAREST
The capital city is a clean and safe city to live and work in, with a good public metro and tram system, which costs around 20 euros for a monthly pass (students have free access). You can walk around at night on your own safely and there is lots to do on the weekends. You have malls located throughout the city with all the Western brand shops and restaurants you would expect, but at prices far below Western Europe, so your money goes much further.
International teachers are paid 2-3 times the average salary, so it is relatively easy to save, and eating out is cheap, costing around 15 euros for a 2-course meal and a drink, which is why many of our international staff eat out on a regular basis.
TEACHING AT IBSB
The students at IBSB are generally above the UK average in ability and well-behaved, so by and large, it is a pleasure to teach at IBSB, with plenty of support from both the school and the parents - we are very fortunate to have one of the most supportive Parent Associations I have experienced to date, who for example organised a surprise morning tea for all the staff at the end of Term 1a this year to thank us for a successful first half term.
SMALL CLASS SIZES
Class sizes are relatively small, with up to 22 students in KS3 & 4, and usually less than 10 students in both KS5 English Language and Literature, allowing for more teacher-student contact time and personal support in Key Stages 5.
A SUPPORTIVE TEACHING ENVIRONMENT
The teaching environment is personalised and friendly, with many successful programmes set up to support and extend students at both ends of the spectrum. Behaviour is excellent with little more than minor low-level disruption for teachers to deal with.
Staff turnover is low at IBSB, with many staff having bought apartments and houses, owing to the comfortable lifestyle offered in Romania, a country with 4 seasons, spectacular mountains, a beautiful coastline, and the ability to save a larger than normal portion of your monthly salary for Europe.
ISI INSPECTION REPORT (SEPT 2022) - 'AWARDED EXCELLENT'
The school received the highest rating in the Sept 2022 ISI BSO inspection, judged Excellent for the Quality of Education in both student learning and achievement and personal development and wellbeing. BSO Report Template (ibsb.ro)
HPL WORLD CLASS SCHOOL
We completed our two-year HPL journey in June 2022 and are now the only accredited HPL World Class School in Eastern Europe, with the school campus doubling in size over the past few years. In every way, it is an exciting time to be joining our team, with plenty to look forward to in the next few years in the school development plan.
NACE CHALLENGE AWARD
We are also a member of NACE, having embarked on the journey toward the Nace Challenge Award, providing more challenge to our aspiring students on their HPL journey toward becoming high-performance learners.
UCL PARTNER SCHOOL
We are also a UCL partner school offering NPQ courses to our staff and the wider community, with a number of our staff currently on the NPQH, NPQSL, and NPQLT. There is a generous CPD budget at IBSB to ensure that the school remains current and that staff are able to progress in their careers.
