A Little More About Your Role
WSP’s aviation experts plan, design and manage the construction of the airports of tomorrow, focusing on resilience, sustainability and smart technologies. We are currently looking for a Principal Airfield Civil Engineer to help deliver our UK and international engineering projects. The role requires a deep understanding of multi‑disciplinary project delivery, and opportunities for international travel, CPD development and mentorship of junior engineers.
Responsibilities
* Act as the design lead for airfield civil engineering projects.
* Take ownership of the successful delivery of projects while giving leadership and direction to junior team members, including planning their work and managing multiple technical engineering projects.
* Prepare technical reports, calculations, drawings and specifications for airfield projects in the UK and overseas.
* Contribute to technical design reviews to meet WSP quality management requirements.
* Communicate and coordinate designs with team members, industry associates and clients.
* Identify and manage design risks, issues and RFIs.
* Ensure all deliverables and milestones are achieved to cost/quality/time targets.
* Act as a role model for junior staff, providing technical guidance and mentorship.
* Champion excellent health and safety practice, including safety in design, site walk safety and compliance with CDM regulations.
* Support Project Managers by monitoring project progress and contributing to project controls, including change management, information management and document control.
* Respond to client directions in a professional, customer‑focused manner and develop relationships with clients and peers to support future business.
* Contribute to the continuous growth of the Airfield Engineering team in line with the growth strategy.
* Identify, capitalise and develop existing client relationships to secure future business.
What We Are Looking For You to Demonstrate
* A university degree relevant to civil engineering, construction, design or a related discipline.
* Chartered or Incorporated Status (MICE, MCIHT or equivalent) is preferable but not essential.
* Experience delivering large, technically complex multi‑disciplinary airfield civil engineering projects.
* Knowledge of international airfield design standards such as ICAO, CAA, EASA and FAA.
* Knowledge and experience of using Civil 3D and other airfield engineering design software such as AviPlan, SkySafe and FAARFIELD.
* Knowledge of and experience with construction contracts (e.g., NEC).
* Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
* A demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, sharing ideas and collaborating to solve complex problems.
* Competence in independently leading technical engineering projects and making technical decisions for projects you are responsible for delivering.
