We provide specialist services in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, respiratory medicine including adult cystic fibrosis and diagnostic imaging, both in the hospital and out in the community. We serve a catchment area of 2.8 million people, spanning Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man, and increasingly we receive referrals from outside these areas for highly specialised services such as aortics. Heart and lung disease continue to be amongst the biggest killers in the UK and the communities we serve are marked by increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease, higher levels of heart failure, hypertension, coronary artery disease and an ageing population. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced surgeon who is passionate about delivering high-quality patient care, advancing clinical excellence and contributing to the continued development of our surgical services. The job is intended to be a full time (11.75 PA) post in Cardiac Surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Whilst no particular surgical specifics are stipulated, the potential for sub-specialty development in line with future advances and requirements of the Trust will be strongly supported. Unpredictable emergency on-call work 1 PA Category A on-call 1 in 10 Weekend Ward Rounds 1:16 0.25 PA Total PA’s 11.75 PA Working for our organisation The Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provide medical and surgical adult cardiothoracic services to the people of Merseyside, North Wales, Isle of Man, parts of Lancashire and Cheshire; this catchment area has a population of approximately 2.9 million people. The unit is one of the largest of its kind in the country. Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is configured to perform up to 2,200 heart procedures and 1,500 thoracic procedures, including in the region of 700 major thoracic operations. The full range of services for adult cardiothoracic surgical patients (except for transplantation) is provided. The thoracic aortic aneurysm service provides a comprehensive service with annual activities of 150-180 major aortic cases; a dedicated on-call service is provided by this group. Whilst no particular surgical specifics are stipulated, the potential for sub-specialty development in line with future advances and requirements of the Trust will be strongly supported. The draft job plan is outlined under the terms and conditions section. On-call for Cardiac Surgery is a 1 in 10 rota with a category A frequency payment. The successful candidate will have full secretarial support, a personal computer (training available if required) and office accommodation in line with other consultants in the unit. There is a significant commitment to research and audit and a training commitment to the resident doctors. The trust supports the annual appraisal process and routine GMC revalidation for all consultants and all consultants undergo an annual job plan. The appointee will be expected to work flexibly based on the needs of the Surgical Division and the Trust. The workload will be driven by the job planning process and be reviewed and changed appropriate to the requirements of the Trust by the Surgical Clinical Lead with the Divisional Head of Operations with ratification by the Medical Director. It should be noted that full mentorship / preceptorship will be provided to the successful candidate. We reserve the right to close this vacancy early.
