From delivering new council homes to welcoming major institutions like UCL, London College of Fashion, V&A East, and the soon-to-arrive Smithfield and Billingsgate Markets at the Royal Docks – this is a borough on the move.

We’re looking for someone who can help us share this incredible story with the world.

As Media Relations Manager in our newly restructured Communications team, you’ll play a pivotal role in protecting, building, and enhancing Newham Council’s reputation. You’ll provide strategic communications advice to senior leaders, manage proactive and reactive media relations, and be the go-to person for handling complex, high-profile issues.

This is a fast-paced, challenging role in a borough that never stands still. You’ll need:

1. Outstanding communication skills and a sharp news sense.
2. Excellent judgment under pressure – and the ability to keep a cool head when it matters most.
3. A willingness to work flexibly – this isn’t a 9-to-5 job. You’ll spend at least two days a week in our London office, travel occasionally, and take part in our out-of-hours emergency planning rota.
