We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Engineering Technician within Neonatal Services. The successful candidate will perform scheduled preventative and corrective maintenance, calibration, safety and acceptance testing on a range of medical and clinical equipment as required under the guidance of the Team Lead and experienced Engineers.
The successful applicant will receive in-house and manufacturer training, gaining and recording competencies in technical tasks across a range of medical devices as defined by the Clinical Engineering technical competency framework and department need. Individuals will develop a portfolio of knowledge, evidenced competence and experience, aligned to a nationally recognised standard as this role is progressive to Clinical Engineer (Band 5) following a successful completion of the PTP degree course (Apprenticeship levy funded).
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
Main duties of the job
All task and duties performed under guidance and or supervision of the team leader and other engineers
Organises routine tasks that have been allocated to them by team leader.
Performs tasks and duties on a range of medical devices
Seeks and receives advice regarding repairs, servicing and spare parts when required
Understands the effects of medical equipment failure
Works towards expanding their technical competency on a range of medical devices
Performs safety testing to BS EN 62353 Safety Standards for Medical Equipment and acceptance testing to Managing Medical Devices - Jan 2021 guidance.
Performs diagnostic and fault finding procedures on malfunctioning medical equipment, reporting potentially hazardous symptoms and faults to the Team Leader and the department management as appropriate.
Performs calibration, quality control and functional checks, on patient critical medical equipment.
Determines, as far as reasonably practicable, that medical equipment meets the manufacturer's specification.
Uses Manufacturer's Service Manuals, following and interpreting circuit diagrams in order to diagnose faults.
Works safely with potentially fatal voltages and currents and with compressed gases when repairing medical equipment.
Sources best price components from approved suppliers, complying with Quality System.
Uses tools and equipment in the mechanical workshop safely and appropriately.

Job responsibilities
Performs a range of technical activities for the management of medical devices, including repair, preventative maintenance, calibration, performance and safety checks, and acceptance checks on new equipment.
Performs these activities on a range of medical devices.
Uses and operates the Trusts medical devices asset register in accordance with the quality system
Receives requests for any of the range of clinical engineering services from all customers and refers them to the appropriate personnel within the department
Performs acceptance and safety checks on medical equipment presented for trial or research, acting on any non-compliance issues.
Prioritises workload in response to urgent requests for assistance
Receives patients and other visitors to Clinical Engineering with due regard for their safety in potentially dangerous environment.
Requests the service and repair of equipment by external suppliers ensuring that it is performed to the satisfaction of Clinical Engineering and the equipment user.
Acts on relevant safety action bulletins, hazard notices, engineering updates and modifications as directed by the department management and the MDSO.
Works to ensure that the technical safety of equipment complies with relevant standards
Updates equipment records, scientific and technical documentation in accordance with the Quality System and Trusts Medical Devices Asset Register.
Is familiar with, and follows the Trusts Incident Reporting procedure and is involved in the investigation of adverse incidents relating to medical equipment as directed by the Team Leader and the MDSO.
Understands, works and complies with the Quality System, bringing to the attention of the Quality Manager and Team Leader any non-compliance.
Participates in internal audits for the Quality System.
Orders appropriate spare parts, complying with Quality System.
Ensures that personal and general test equipment is within calibration dates.
Participates in group meetings and team briefings with the department management, Team Leaders and others as required.
Generates income for the Trust through work with other NHS and independent clients.
Provides assistance to other colleagues and teams within Clinical Engineering including the Medical Equipment Library as appropriate.
Ensures main workshop facilities, mechanical workshop, store areas and lease vehicles are kept clear, well-ordered, in a tidy condition and that all general test equipment is maintained to acceptable and professional standards.
Uses and take responsibility for all tools and equipment within their care as required and is competent and authorised to do so, including computer equipment and software.
Takes appropriate precautions in the work environment, where there could be exposure to hazards of electrical, optical, mechanical, biological, radiological and chemical natures.
Takes appropriate precautions when working in the clinical environment or at the customers premises to minimise hazards to themselves and the customer of electrical, optical, mechanical, biological, radiological and chemical natures.
Decontaminates medical devices presented for repair or testing when required, to comply with the Trusts infection control policy and to protect themselves, their colleagues and equipment users, taking appropriate precautions when equipment contaminated with bodily and chemical substances.
Works close to patients on wards and outpatient departments, in Intensive Care Units throughout the Trust and in Theatres while operations are taking place
Person Specification
Knowledge and Experience
* Able to logically diagnose component and system faults on electronic equipment
* Working proven knowledge of computer systems
* Working proven knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
* Demonstrable experience in electro-mechanical engineering workshop practices and techniques
* Demonstrable experience of servicing patient critical medical equipment
* Demonstrable experience of working to a Quality System
* Proven knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
Qualifications
* ONC/OND in an Engineering discipline or completion of the Healthcare Engineering Specialist Technician Apprenticeship
* HNC/HND/Foundation Degree or equivalent in an Engineering discipline
* Membership of a Professional Body
