Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of a SAU Analyst. This is a wage position, not to exceed 1500 working hours per year (May 1 - April 30). This position is also not entitled to state benefits.

The SAU Analyst provides critical emergency communication and situational awareness services for the Commonwealth of Virginia in a 24/7 operations environment. Key responsibilities include:

- Monitoring and operating emergency management communication systems to ensure timely and accurate dissemination of information.
- Receiving, analyzing, and prioritizing data related to emergencies and incidents from state and local agencies.
- Issuing alerts and warnings, maintaining the Common Operating Picture (COP), and preparing daily situation reports.
- Coordinating emergency medical communications, including air medical services, and relaying critical information between aircraft, ground crews, and hospitals.
- Performing daily operational checks and troubleshooting of communication equipment and systems.
- Supporting project planning and resource coordination to enhance operational readiness and response capabilities.

The primary work schedule for this position will require availability during one of the following shifts: 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Availability outside of the designated shifts may be scheduled once operational needs have been met.

All VDEM employees are designated as essential personnel and may be required to work during emergency situations such as inclement weather and natural or human-made disasters. This may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the Employee Work Profile.

Minimum Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of standard communication procedures, principles, equipment, and practices of emergency management.
• Ability to allocate and direct resources in response to emergencies with minimal supervision.
• Considerable skill in the use of social media platforms and data/news aggregation software.
• Experience with public safety radios, phone systems, and mass notification systems and other related communications equipment. Adept with Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Microsoft Office and various web products.
• Ability to perform dispatch services with accuracy and speed.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills; ability to multi-task, ability to relay technical and sensitive information to diverse individuals and groups.
• Ability to work in a 24-hour operation, 7-day rotating schedule including overnight, early morning, and weekend shifts, as required by the staffing needs of the SAU.

Additional Considerations

• Experience working in an emergency operations center or similar command center as an analyst, dispatcher, or in a related field.
• Experience interacting with government officials and program stakeholders.
• Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) level B Certification.

The salary for this position is negotiable up to the maximum hiring range listed in this posting. Offers will not be made outside of the hiring range. This is a restricted position due to the funding source.
