Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a pharmacist with a passion for antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) & infection management to join our AMS team at University Hospitals Sussex. This new role focuses on optimising the use of intravenous antimicrobials (IV) in patients admitted to Worthing and St Richards hospitals. The successful candidate will be engaged in actively reviewing patients on IV antimicrobials, have close contact with clinical teams to promote timely therapy changes, and support the Trust’s IPC and AMS agenda. We are a department that pioneers technology to support stewardship, encouraging the use of innovative methods to identify and support stewardship interventions, including IV to oral switch (IVOS).
Main duties of the job
* Review intravenous antimicrobial prescriptions and engage with clinical teams to review patients on IV antimicrobials to make timely changes in therapy, supporting patient flow and reducing costs and risks associated with inappropriate IV treatments.
* Develop strategies to promote timely review of antimicrobials with all clinicians, raising the profile of regular review through educational tools and key performance indicators for sharing at local, divisional & trust-wide platforms.
* Provide expert advice on the safe and appropriate use of antimicrobials, supporting the wider AMS agenda and maintaining local empirical guidelines.
* Support the local outpatient antimicrobial therapy service by attending the MDT and resolving actions from the weekly meeting.
Responsibilities – Scheduler and Guidance
* Daily stewardship activities through prescription chart review, attendance on microbiology and AMS ward rounds.
* Co-authoring and reviewing local guidelines, maintaining platforms to ensure accurate information on antimicrobial use is available to clinicians.
* Support Lead Pharmacist – Clinical Infection to meet governance requirements and ensure compliance with national policy.
* Audit antimicrobial stewardship activities, responding to NPSA alerts, NICE guidance, CQUINs and National Contract requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
Professional registration
* Registered member of the GPhC.
Experience
* Further post‑graduate qualification in clinical pharmacy at PG diploma level or sufficient experience equating to this level.
* Experience in clinical hospital pharmacy across a broad range of specialties.
* Experience in an MDT and, preferably, as a specialist pharmacist within antimicrobials.
* Desirable: Independent prescriber, PG qualification in AMS, PG leadership or management qualification.
Skills
* Experience of planning and reporting service audits.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Experience working in an MDT.
* Desirable: Clinical pharmacy service to critical care, development of teaching and training programmes.
People management and development
* Teaching and tutoring experience.
* Staff management experience and program development desirable.
