Job Description

Brain tumours are the biggest form of cancer related deaths in children and adults under 40 in the UK. Yet they receive a fraction of the funding and attention of other cancers. This imbalance shouldn’t exist, and The Brain Tumour Charity are here to change this.

As the largest dedicated funder of brain tumour research globally and the only UK charity that’s tackling brain tumours on three vital fronts: research, campaigning and direct support; everything The Brain Tumour Charity does is rooted in the experiences and voices of those affected.

They’ve made great strides together with their community and partners, but know they can move further, faster.

They are looking for a Chair to lead the Board through their next chapter – someone who brings not only governance expertise and strategic clarity, but empathy, passion for their vision and a commitment to collaboration. You’ll be joining at an exciting time as they continue to grow their impact and deliver change in line with their strategy to 2030.

Their work is comprehensive and wide-reaching:

* Transforming the research landscape: They fund an extensive and diverse portfolio of research across the UK and internationally from early discovery to clinical trials. This research aims to transform the research landscape for people with brain tumours and give rise to the best chance of finding the cures that are so desperately needed.
* Improving quality of life – providing support and best care for everyone: They offer a comprehensive Support and Information service for anyone affected by a diagnosis, for however long they need. This includes the Support and Information Line, free counselling service, online peer-to-peer support and a dedicated Children and Families service.
* Raising voices to campaign for change: They raise the voices of those impacted to ensure that brain tumours remain a national priority – securing policy change to support the community to live longer and better.

The Chair will ensure that the Board functions as a collective and will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure the Board’s decisions are implemented and the charity is managed effectively in line with strategic objectives. The Chair will manage the Board’s relationship with the CEO and will act as an ambassador and a public face of the charity in concert with the CEO.

Central to The Brain Tumour Charity’s mission is a commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion at all levels of the organisation. As part of this endeavour, The Brain Tumour Charity are actively encouraging applications from under-represented groups such as returning parents or carers after a career break, people who are LGBT+, from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, with a disability, impairment, learning difference or long-term condition, with caring responsibilities, from different nations and regions and those with a lived experience of poverty as well as any other under-represented group.
