We support a charming older lady who lives in a care home in Hastings/St Leonards on Sea. She would love for you to drop by for a friendly chat, over a cup of tea and some sweets (she's got a very sweet tooth). She enjoys talking about her life and family - reminiscing about days gone by. She has a dementia diagnosis, so if you have any experience with this, it would be valuable, but we can also provide training. Visits would likely only be around 45 minutes to an hour. She is fairly flexible around times and days of visits. Do get in touch with any questions!
We offer a lifelong befriending service for adults with learning disabilities. Matching the skills and interests of passionate visitors with the specific hobbies and interests of the people we visit. Visitors visit six times a year to create a 1-2-1 connection, offer companionship, encourage people to do the things they enjoy, and check on their wellbeing. In many cases, the visitor is the only person in someone's life who isn't paid to be there for them.
This is a stop-and-stay, let's-get-busy visitor role, which means the person you will be visiting can communicate actively with you and participate in choosing or planning activities. As you get to know each other, you may choose to go out either with or without support from staff. Your volunteer manager will be happy to help with ideas and suggestions. Visits will vary in length but tend to be around an hour or longer, depending on activities.
In this role, you will spend quality time with the person you visit and could do activities like:
* Sitting and having a chat
* Checking in on their wellbeing
* Going out to a local café or pub for a meal or drink
* Enjoying a walk
* A craft activity at home
* Reading a book or magazine together
As a Mencap volunteer visitor, you will be:
* Friendly and approachable
* Accepting of others who might be different from yourself
* Reliable and patient
* Passionate about supporting people with a learning disability
Benefits include:
* Helping make a difference in someone's life
* Receiving personalized induction and training
* Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
* Meeting new people
* Ongoing support and feeling appreciated
