Overview
This role is a part time, 28.5 hour per week, Band 6 nurse to join our outpatient team at Main OPD RSCH within The Corporate Directorate. It is RSCH's Main OPD unit offering care to patients from a wide-ranging demographic, many with complex health needs. The department runs clinics covering medical and surgical cardiology, respiratory, chemical pathology, allergy, digestive diseases, diabetes, endocrinology, stroke, anticoagulation, vascular, ACHD and haematology. The post holder should understand the differing clinical needs and pathways for patients in these specialties. Experience in outpatients and the listed specialties is helpful but training can be provided for areas required for the successful applicant. This role involves driving outpatient services forward and representing this area at senior level. The successful candidate will be offered a supportive and friendly working environment with opportunities to develop further.

Main duties
The role is split between working clinically and assisting in the organization and management of the department. The post holder will:
* Work in all clinic specialties
* Work with the Practice Educator for the professional development and education of all staff
* Motivate, lead and support the team; be an empowering leader with a proven ability to deliver high quality care. Undertake audits and implement changes as required
* Deliver a high standard of individualized, holistic, patient-centred care
* Contribute to and influence the total patient experience and journey through collaborative working and effective communication
* Promote effective communication with external agencies to facilitate ongoing patient care
* Produce accurate and legible nursing records according to NMC guidelines
* Be responsible for the development, planning and coordination of clinics while supervising junior team members
* Support senior staff in the management of the Department by assisting with management of staff, resources and skill mix to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness
* Take part in the appraisal process
* Maintain full awareness of current regimes, policies, and protocols

Job responsibilities – Patient Care Delivery
* To assess, plan and implement care in consultation with the multi-disciplinary team for general outpatient clinics
* To update and maintain nursing procedures in patients' records (manual or electronic) as required
* To act as a direct point of contact during outpatient treatments, providing advice on treatments or procedures as needed
* Work unsupervised providing nursing care as part of the multi-disciplinary team, communicating with and referring to other healthcare professionals as necessary
* Deliver a high standard of individualized holistic patient care to promote and maintain physical, social, cultural and psychological wellbeing
* Maintain full awareness of current regimes, policies and protocols
* Gain knowledge and competence in venepuncture, ECGs, complex vascular dressings and compression bandaging
* Act in emergency situations with the ability to make clinical decisions under pressure
* Handle telephone enquiries promptly and courteously
* Maintain competence and knowledge within one\'s own area of speciality
* Work in a way that eliminates the risk of infection; follow infection control and safety audits
* Contribute to developments within the Main Outpatient Department
* Act as the patient advocate using the NMC Professional Code of Conduct as a framework
* Act as patient chaperone where necessary for medical examinations

Person Specification
Essential and Desirable
* Essential: RGN / 1st level RN (NMC registration with current PIN); computer literate; experience in supervising staff; good organisational skills; recent experience in a healthcare setting
* Excellent observation skills; good communication skills (written and spoken English); ability to communicate complex information to patients and the multidisciplinary team; able to cope with distressing situations; have team-building skills; ability to prioritise and manage own work and delegate to junior staff; good time management; initiative; within own specialist area of competence
* Deputise for the senior sister; capability to support junior staff; experience in management, supervision, coordination, teaching, training and development of employees/students
* Substantial post-qualification experience
* Desirable: evidence of ongoing professional development; teaching and assessing/supervisory qualifications; experience working in an Outpatients Department
* Undertake complex vascular dressings; compression bandaging; perform ECGs; spirometry; FeNO; venepuncture
* Experience providing appraisals to staff
* Be adaptable to work across UHSussex sites in different OPD areas
* Understanding patient-first approach and Tendable audit process
