Overview As a Compliance Analyst, you are responsible for maintaining lodging tax content on a customer level to ensure rates and filing frequencies are up to date with each jurisdiction. You will assist in sourcing indirect tax content based on locally administered statutes and ordinances as well as reporting forms and associated metadata to support our content growth for commercial lodging taxes. You will review research from local jurisdictions, and contact local jurisdictions, on Avalara’s behalf, and then document the results in tickets that flow to other team members. Responsibilities Assist in sourcing, reviewing and creating consumable content for assigned jurisdictions based on a dynamic set of projects Provide tax rules, rates, forms, instructions, and compliance metadata on templates and/or JIRA tickets per established processes Build productive working relationships with state, county and city authorities to maximize the quality of our product Meet targets and milestone dates as assigned Maintain lodging content in Avalara Product Maintain customer level content (rates, filing frequency) in Avalara Product Qualifications Qualifications A natural curiosity about technology and an interest in innovation and learning about new areas of transaction taxes Excellent research and analytical skills, including a logical and creative approach to drilling down to specific data to surface information that is vital to the accuracy of published content Ability to work in and support a team environment through collective team topics, load balancing, and sharing/receiving constructive feedback Ability to multi task, troubleshoot, and problem solve in a calm, analytical and methodical manner that also demonstrates a sense of urgency Proactively participate in a dynamic and innovative tax environment by maintaining a high level of energy while being consistently dependable, efficient, and accurate Ability to maintain organization and attention to detail Ability to use a laptop and various software, including MS Office, browsers, subscription research services and Avalara products Demonstrated high standards of excellence in work product and professionalism Strong oral and written communication skills necessary for interacting with the local governments on Avalara’s behalf Solid organization and self-pacing skills Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with tax returns and/or government compliance Familiarity with JIRA Familiarity with lodging tax requirements and regulations Knowledge of point of sale systems supporting lodging establishments Relevant degree or experience (i.e. Accounting, Finance, Law, Economics, Geography, Data Science) or 1-3 years equivalent experience researching tax law About Avalara About Avalara: We’re building cloud-based tax compliance solutions to handle every transaction in the world.
