Who are we?

GWR is the proud custodian of Brunel's railway - one of the most prestigious networks in the world. We have some of the newest trains in the country and exciting plans to extend our services. With more than one hundred million passenger journeys each year, we carry people to over 275 stations in the South West, from Cornwall and South Wales to London, passing through beautiful country and some of the UK's top tourist destinations.

We are transforming the way people think about train travel, empowering our team of over 6,000 people from all different backgrounds to make it a great experience for our customers. Together, we will revalue rail as a very special way to travel - relaxing, fast, efficient, friendly and fun.

About the Job

St Philips Marsh Depot is home to the DMU West Fleet. We work to a tight exam regime with day & night servicing to achieve a safe, clean and prompt service delivery for our customers.

As a Multi Skilled Technician you will be working within a team that provides complete in-service support covering all aspects of maintenance tasks. Working primarily on our DMUs you will have a clear focus on safety, team working and service delivery. Candidates will also be trained as wheel lathe operators and to carry out tyre turning duties on all types of T&RS.

About you

You’ll need to be an experienced Technician in both electrical and mechanical, strong fault‑finding skills and have an NVQ Level 3 or C&G qualification in Engineering.

Excellent communication skills are essential for this position to ensure accurate and timely communications with colleagues to enable us to meet deadlines and deliver for our customers. DMU experience would be an advantage; however, if you have a dynamic and motivated approach towards work and learning we would like to hear from you.

About the location

St Philips Marsh is based in Bristol with excellent rail links via Bristol Temple Meads, with a short 15/20‑minute walk. Also close to the M4 off junction 19 and down the M32.

The depot has 7 distinct areas of working; Marsh Junction, Tech office, Wheel Lathe, HSS Shed, Routine Service Shed (RSS), Victoria Sidings & Coal Field, which all play a vital part in the running of a busy maintenance facility.

Working Pattern

This position will require shift working and currently the pattern for this role is 4 on 4 off which will include weekends and bank holidays. This is a safety critical role and the successful candidate will be subject to the relevant medical standards.

Additional Information

There is currently one post available, but we will create a reserve list if there is more than one appointable candidate. The reserve list will be valid for 6 months.

Must live within 1hr travel of the depot.

The Reward

As well as a great team environment and comprehensive training, all GWR colleagues enjoy a range of benefits including on‑going development, defined benefit pension scheme, free rail travel across the GWR network for you and your family, company‑sponsored health care plan, discounted shopping and gym membership and an employee assistance programme.

Equality and Inclusion

We all belong at GWR. This is our vision for providing an inclusive environment for all our colleagues, ensuring all candidates have an equal opportunity to access meaningful employment.

We value our differences such as age, gender, LGBTQIA+, ethnicity, religion, and disability. We maintain a zero tolerance towards any form of prejudice towards our colleagues, customers, and future talent.

We celebrate and encourage diversity of thought, progressive ways of working and seeing all our colleagues grow and thrive.

We review all roles and job descriptions to ensure they are accessible and, where possible, we support and provide flexible working options; we recommend that you refer to each vacancy description for further details.

If you require additional support to complete your application due to a disability or neurodivergent condition, for example, dyslexia, dyspraxia, or autism, please follow the links below. We encourage you to share any additional needs you may require so we can provide a fair and equal process for all who apply.
