We are currently working in partnership with a welcoming and well-maintained primary school in the Wakefield area to recruit an experienced School Caretaker. This is a key on-site role and would suit someone who takes pride in their work, understands the day-to-day demands of a busy primary school, and is confident managing the site independently.
This is not a facilities role where duties are limited - we are looking for a hands-on, reliable caretaker who has previous experience working within a school environment and understands exactly what the role involves.
The Role
As School Caretaker, you will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, security and presentation of the school site, ensuring the premises remain safe, clean and welcoming for pupils, staff and visitors.
Duties will include:
* Opening and closing the school site, including unlocking/locking buildings and gates
* Carrying out regular health & safety checks across the premises
* Basic repairs and maintenance (e.g. minor plumbing, joinery, painting, fixes)
* Monitoring heating systems, lighting and alarms
* Carrying out grounds' maintenance including litter picking, gritting and basic outdoor upkeep
* Overseeing contractors on site and liaising with external services
* Ensuring compliance with safeguarding, fire safety and COSHH procedures
* Supporting with room setups for school events when required
* Being a visible, dependable presence on site throughout the school day
The Ideal Candidate
To be considered for this role, applicants must have:
* Previous experience working as a caretaker within a school setting
* A clear understanding of health & safety within a primary school environment
* Practical maintenance skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving
* The ability to work independently and manage your own workload
* A professional, approachable manner when working around children and staff
* A strong sense of responsibility and pride in maintaining school standards
An enhanced DBS on the Update Service is desirable, or you must be willing to apply for one.
