Job Overview

Consultant Psychiatrist for the Uned Gobaith Mother & Baby Unit (MBU), a 6‑bed Specialist Mother & Baby Psychiatric Inpatient Unit in South Wales.


Main Duties

* Provide evidence‑based mental health assessment, diagnosis and treatment to women and birthing individuals at increased risk of or presenting with symptoms of mental illness during the perinatal period.
* Undertake thorough assessment of risk, prepare risk formulation and management plans for patients admitted to the MBU.
* Act as the responsible clinician for patients admitted to the MBU.
* Safeguard vulnerable groups in line with All Wales Safeguarding policy, preparing reports, attending meetings and building relationships with multi‑agency colleagues.
* Provide professional consultation and education to professionals working with women and birthing individuals and their families across the perinatal mental health pathway.


Qualifications

Essential
* Registered with the GMC.
* On Specialist Register with GMC as a specialist in Psychiatry or eligible for CCT within 6 months of interview date and have passed exit exam or have a statement of eligibility for registration issued by PMETB or a primary medical qualification and recognised specialist qualification from a European Member State which allows direct entry to the GMC Specialist Register.
* Licensed to practice.
Desirable
* Further relevant degree or diploma.
* Teaching qualification or higher qualification in medical education.


Experience

Essential
* Evidence of developing effective working relationships with all levels of staff (Working Together).
* Values partnership with other agencies (Working Together).
* Evidence of teaching and training of postgraduate or undergraduate clinical staff.
* Experience of working with patients experiencing mental illness and their families during the perinatal period.
Desirable
* Experience of research in Perinatal Mental Health or related fields such as Women and Child Health.
* Experience of professional practice within Perinatal Mental Health Services.


Skills & Abilities

Essential
* Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with patients, colleagues, relatives and staff, communicating openly and honestly and explaining things clearly.
* Excellent knowledge in Perinatal Psychiatry.
* Excellent clinical skills using a bio‑psycho‑social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
* Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
* Make decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others.
* Ability to meet all duties under the MHA and MCA.
* Ability to assess and manage risk underpinned by consideration of current evidence base, clinical experience and MDT perspectives.
* Ability to work co‑productively with Service Users (and their relatives) in producing care and treatment plans, and designing and delivering service improvement projects.


Personal Attributes

* Flexible and adaptable to competing demands with the ability to work effectively under pressure and cope with setbacks.
* Ability to undertake on‑call duties.
* Enthusiasm to take a lead role in clinical development.
* Empathy and sensitivity – ability to listen, understand and involve people, seeing people as individuals.
Desirable
* Welsh language skills / ability to speak Welsh.
