Southwark CAMHS Neurodevelopmental Service

This is a fixed term Consultant post which has been created as part of service changes in Southwark CAMHS. It offers a unique opportunity to join an established and dynamic team of Consultants in Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, within South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will work with the Neurodevelopmental service, part of Southwark CAMHS, and join two other consultant colleagues in the team working less than full time.

Main duties of the job

This post includes direct clinical activity and SPAs, structured professional activities, during which the post holder will contribute to service development, clinical governance and quality improvement, in addition to completing continuous professional development and pursuing other professional activities.

The main responsibilities of the post include:

Assessment and management of children and young people, and to provide psychiatric input for both routine and emergency clinical care.

Consultation to team members and professionals from other agencies, for example family early help practitioners, education colleagues etc.

To carry out mental health and risk assessments on children and young people, including with regards to the use of the MHA, as appropriate, and to support the multi-disciplinary team in managing these situations effectively.

To assume responsibility for own case list and case management of children and families, in partnership with the MDT.

Duties of this post holder also include:

To use pharmacological interventions, as appropriate, in partnership with children and their families and their networks of care.

Supervision of junior medical staff the team has and allocated CT, an ST and a specialty doctor.

Participation in training of medical students, psychiatric trainees and multidisciplinary staff.

Attending and chairing clinical meetings as timetabled.

To consider safeguarding issues for each case, as relevant, consulting with other professionals and referring concerns to the appropriate safeguarding teams as required.

To communicate skilfully, tactfully and sensitively with children, families and other professionals, taking account any potential barrier to communication.

To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping and report writing, according to professional and Trust guidelines, including electronic data entry and recording.

To work as an autonomous professional, within professional guidelines and the policies and procedures of the Trust and service and provide advice and guidance as appropriate to members of the MDT.

To link with statutory and voluntary agencies and professionals as well as other CAMHS Teams, as appropriate, in support of referral and treatment pathways and joint work.

To maintain good relationships and clear lines of communication with other professional agencies and departments, providing specialist advice and support where appropriate.

To maintain a high standard of verbal and written communication and to provide continuity of care.

To participate in peer and group supervision meetings.

To adhere to agreed job plan and appraisal procedures set by the Trust.

To maintain GMC registration, maintain a License to Practice and participate in CPD to remain in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

To maintain Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval. If the appointee is not Section 12 or AC approved, they will be expected to become so as soon as possible.

To provide prospective cross cover for colleagues during periods of leave and to provide advice and/or clinical input, as needed, to other CAMHS teams covered.

Person Specification

Eligibility

Essential

1. Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
2. Evidence for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within six months of gaining CCT in C&A psychiatry or Equivalent training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CESR issued by the GMC)
3. Section 12 approved
4. Approved Clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment

Training and Experience

Essential

5. Experience in Outpatient/Community Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
6. Experience of assessing and managing complex co-morbidities

Desirable

7. Trained in ADI and/or ADOS
8. Training in investigation of complaints and SIs
9. Experience of providing consultation to non-CAMHS practitioners and multi-agency work
10. Special interest in neurodevelopmental conditions
11. Experience and/or additional training in forensic mental health
12. Experience of paediatric liaison and crisis care
13. Specialist training in psychopharmacology

ACADEMIC SKILLS & LIFELONG LEARNING

Essential

14. Management/Audit - Participation in audit or QI in clinical posts (A) (I)
15. Teaching - Experience of teaching a range of disciplines (A)
16. Research - Involvement in research projects
17. Excellent demonstrable communication skills in English (both oral and written)
18. Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and resolve conflict

Qualifications

Essential

29. MRCPsych or equivalent

Desirable

30. Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
31. Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management

Clinical skills

Essential

33. Excellent leadership skills
