Skin Bioassay Senior Scientist
Nottingham | On-site
We are seeking a Skin Bioassay Senior Scientist to join a growing CRO environment developing advanced in vitro skin models and bioassays for both pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. This role supports both ongoing projects and the development of new model systems, with a focus on generating high‑quality datasets, developing human‑relevant skin models, and delivering impactful assay results for clients.
Responsibilities
Skin Model Development
* Develop and optimise in vitro skin models, including Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RHE) and full‑thickness or full‑skin equivalent systems.
* Contribute to the evolution of increasingly complex, physiologically relevant models.
Assay Development & Delivery
* Design and execute cosmetic and skin‑related bioassays such as cell proliferation and viability assays, cytokine release and inflammatory marker assays, and barrier function and sensitivity assessments.
* Analyse and interpret experimental data, ensuring the generation of robust, client‑ready datasets.
Molecular & Analytical Techniques
* Apply techniques including ELISA and immunoassays, qPCR and molecular biology workflows, plate‑based assay readouts.
* Use imaging and histology‑based approaches to assess skin structure and function.
Applied Skin Science & Testing
* Evaluate cosmetic formulations and active compounds.
* Investigate ageing processes and protective effects, UV response using in‑house UV systems, and key skin proteins such as keratin and structural markers.
Project Delivery & Lab Operations
* Deliver experimental work in line with project timelines and client expectations.
* Prepare SOPs, reports, and technical documentation.
* Troubleshoot experiments and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
* Support a collaborative CRO environment, including potential client interaction.
About You
You are a hands‑on scientist with experience in skin biology and in vitro model systems, comfortable working in a fast‑paced, applied research or CRO environment.
Must‑haves
* Experience working with in‑vitro skin models (essential).
* Experience developing Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RHE) models.
* Strong laboratory experience across cell‑based assays and bioassays.
* Knowledge of ELISA, immunoassays, qPCR, and cell culture techniques.
* Practical, delivery‑focused mindset with strong attention to detail.
Highly desirable
* Exposure to full‑skin equivalent or 3D skin models.
* Experience in cosmetic testing, skin ageing, or UV response studies.
* Background in CROs or applied commercial research.
PhD candidates or those with 2‑3 years of relevant industry experience are both encouraged to apply.
