The University of Lincoln invites applications for a fully funded MSc by Research position focused on the rapid detection of foodborne pathogens. This research aims to address the significant public health burden posed by foodborne diseases, which cause millions of cases of illness annually and are increasingly difficult to treat due to antimicrobial resistance. The project involves developing innovative, rapid testing methods—specifically lateral flow dipsticks utilizing isothermal amplification of pathogen DNA—to enable the food industry to detect pathogens swiftly and respond effectively.
Requirements
– Experience with DNA extraction, PCR, and other molecular biology techniques.
– Additional skills in DNA sequence alignment, primer design, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), and microbiology are highly desirable.
– A first or upper second class honours degree in a relevant subject.
– Strong motivation, self-direction, and a focus on delivering research outputs.
– Full-time enrolment is required.
– International applicants are welcome but must cover the difference between home and international tuition fees.
Funding And Benefits
– Tax-free stipend of £19,237 (total).
– Contribution of £4,786 towards tuition fees (covers first year of ‘home’ fees).
– Project funded by Eurofins Food and Water Testing UK Ltd, with opportunities for collaboration and potential employment post-graduation.
