General Teaching Assistant (Year 1) Contract Type: Full-time Temporary Work (Maternity Cover) Start Date: 06/04/2026 Location: Barnet, London, UK Salary: £95 – £100 per day About the Role Teach Now are recruiting on behalf of a progressive Jewish primary school in Barnet that is looking to appoint a General Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 class on a full-time maternity cover basis starting after the half term break. You will be working alongside a strong and experienced class teacher, supporting a mixed-ability Year 1 class and helping pupils to build confidence and make strong progress in their early years of primary education. This role involves supporting the whole class as well as delivering small group interventions in phonics, maths and English. It would suit a Teaching Assistant with previous classroom experience or someone academically strong who is confident supporting early learning and literacy development. Key Responsibilities • Support the Year 1 class teacher with daily classroom activities • Deliver small group interventions in phonics, maths and English • Provide targeted support to pupils with different learning needs • Help maintain a positive, engaging and structured classroom environment • Assist pupils in developing confidence, independence and strong learning habits Requirements To be eligible for this role, applicants should have: • Experience working as a Teaching Assistant in a primary school or relevant education experience • Confidence supporting phonics and early literacy development • The ability to deliver small group interventions effectively • A positive, sensible and proactive attitude • Strong communication and teamwork skills • Relevant TA qualifications or previous classroom experience are highly beneficial.
