About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Systems Accountant to join our Systems Finance Team on a permanent, full-time basis. This is a key specialist role within a professional finance function, offering the opportunity to influence how financial systems are operated, developed, and continuously improved across the organisation.
The successful candidate will play a central role in supporting and enhancing the Council’s financial systems, ensuring they operate effectively, efficiently, and in line with organisational requirements. You will provide high-quality technical support and professional advice to finance colleagues and wider system users, acting as a trusted expert for financial systems matters.
The postholder will work collaboratively with stakeholders across the organisation, external partners, and system providers, exercising sound professional judgement and maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, control, and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
As Systems Accountant, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive financial systems support, including:
1. Administering and maintaining the Unit4 ERP /Financial Management System including user access, workflows, chart of accounts structures, attributes, and system relationships
2. Acting as the primary point of contact for finance systems queries and issues, including managing and resolving helpdesk tickets in a timely and effective manner
3. Providing expert advice, guidance, and support to finance staff and system users, including the development and delivery of training materials
4. Liaising with external software providers and support partners, managing relationships and raising and tracking support cases as required
5. Leading and coordinating testing activities for system upgrades, patches, integrations, and enhancements
6. Managing and prioritising system development and improvement initiatives in line with organisational and service needs
7. Developing, maintaining, and improving financial reports used across the organisation within Unit4 and FP&A tools
8. Managing and overseeing all system interfaces and data flows into Unit4 from feeder systems
9. Reviewing, evaluating, and improving financial systems processes and procedures to drive efficiency and best practice
10. Attending meetings with finance colleagues and managers and progressing actions arising from these discussions
11. Contributing to wider finance projects and ad-hoc work as required
Experience and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
12. A full accounting qualification (CIPFA, ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW or equivalent)
13. Significant proven experience in a Unit4 financial systems support role
14. Demonstrable experience of supporting or leading financial systems and process improvements
15. A strong track record of resolving complex financial systems issues
16. Experience of using helpdesk or ticketing systems
17. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
18. Experience of staff supervision or mentoring

Experience of local government finance or working in a similar public sector environment would be advantageous.
