Key Responsibilities
* Apply highly specialist knowledge in the pharmaceutical management of surgical patients to develop and implement Trust protocols/guidelines and undertake audits and research.
* Support in the development of pharmaceutical services and medicine management for general surgery, vascular, urology, trauma and orthopaedics, and planned and pre‑operative care.
* Provide highly specialist pharmacy advice and training to consultants, junior medical staff, nursing staff, pharmacy staff, other healthcare professionals, patients and carers.
* Liaise with ward, medical and nursing staff, other healthcare professionals, general managers, drug budget holders, pharmacy staff involved in medicine supply, medicines information, and regional and national colleagues.
* Provide regular structured feedback to directorates regarding safe and effective use of medicines and drug expenditure to facilitate service improvement.
* Deputise for the lead pharmacist for surgery, performing and overseeing the monitoring and review of drug therapy for inpatients and outpatients under the surgical directorates, ensuring treatments are appropriate, compliant with current legislation and Trust policies, and fostering efficient working relationships with wards and pharmacy supply services.
* Apply pharmaceutical knowledge and skills through accurate medicines reconciliation on admission and discharge, optimisation during admission, and input to the discharge process at ward level.
* Provide pharmaceutical advice on specialist areas of practice to consultants, junior medical staff, general practitioners, nursing staff, pharmacy staff, other healthcare professionals, and patients and carers, evaluating data where information is sparse or lacking, and formulating a reasoned approach based on professional judgement.
* Work with medical staff to formulate medicine policies and guidelines that promote rational and economical prescribing, monitoring practice to ensure policies and guidelines are adhered to.
